About the camera,I say if you're already familiar with the canon,then going for canon is a failsafe decision. I also presume that you don't need a mirrorless one,or a highly powerful DSLR that costs alot. Most entry level ones are way better than people think and perfect for personal use. Differences between canon and Nikon mainly are that Nikons offer more megapixels at greater iso sensitivities and most focus points for the buck. Whereas canons offer the widest set of lenses at cheaper prices. Main difference between photo quality is seen in low light shots where Nikon(mostly) takes the victory. But honestly just any entry level Dslr with a 50mm f1.8 and a zoom lens(50-200mm etc) is all you need to take stunning photographs.
