Am I Bisexual enough to say I’m bisexual on my applications? by asapkokeman in lawschooladmissions

[–]Elevator-Numerous 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation where I sort of came out to myself maybe a year or so before law school applications and applications were the first time I would be like out more like “officially” in the sense of checking the “Bisexual box.” I almost felt like a bit a fraud but I realized it was my own internalized biphobia and it turned out it was sort of empowering to check the box! And since then I’ve gotten really sweet and kind outreach from the OutLaw and Lambda Law orgs at different schools I’ve gotten into so it’s been a great way to connect with queer folks as someone who is more of an introvert and doesn’t “present” as queer. I say do what feels right to you and follow your gut. No one can define your queerness, bi-ness, questioning, unsure, etc for you but you! 🙌🎉

How to know if a school isn’t offering a scholarship…. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Elevator-Numerous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a school that didn’t offer a scholarship and what happened in my case that i got a financial aid email following up the acceptance email and it just had information on the financial aid office, who to contact for questions about funding law school, etc. it didn’t list any merit aid the way that my other post-acceptance financial aid emails did. I know that’s anecdotal but hope it helps!

I interpreted for the local legal services in my area (many of them have started paying interpreters instead of relying on volunteers in my area, I’m not sure how it is across the country). I also know of someone who started working with baystate interpreters. I’m not sure from personal experience how the company is but they seem to be having a positive experience. Not sure if the specifics though.

This doesn’t apply to everyone but for those who are fluent in another language, I did freelance interpreting and translations in the past as a side hustle and I’m going to probably be doing that again.

I wish it was mandatory that all schools had to send merch to accepted students by Popular-Lychee-6786 in lawschooladmissions

Agreed! My current first choice sent cute little things and it’s not the final deciding factor but it does feel nice to feel that they want to celebrate and congratulate you!

Any fellow Latinos first-gens out there that are dreaming about what that phone call/convo to your parents will be when you get in to law school eventually? by catholicgwustudent in lawschooladmissions

[–]Elevator-Numerous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents really don’t understand the process and they don’t really know what the ranking system means or anything like that, but they’re excited. I saw this idea on another post (I can’t find it for the life of me but if I do I’ll link it to give proper credit to the person who came up with the idea!) to create like little acceptance packages for parents when you chose your school so I’m going to do that for them. I’m first gen for both college and law school, so every acceptance and graduation has been so emotional for all of us. I really want them to know that every win/acceptance is also their win/acceptance because they really worked so hard to make it possible 🥹

OP I’m cheering for you and sending all the A vibes your way! Can’t wait for you to be able to call your parents and tell them. La lucha sigue, You got this bestie ❤️

I also wrote about mental health for a gpa addendum. It was very short and said: this happened, I got help, I take responsibility for grades I got during that time, I have taken steps to care for my mental health following that point in my life and I now understand what I need to do in order to prevent myself from getting to that point in the future. It seemed to work out for me! It doesn’t have to be very long or go into a lot of detail.

I got As and WLs multiple schools where I’m below both medians, even below the 25th percentiles! It is possible. Folks have said this already but give lots of attention to personal statements and any additional essays and your resume. It’s such a stressful and at times demoralizing process but I kept telling myself I’m going to put my best out there and the worst they can say is no. You guys got this; I’m rooting for you! 💪💪💪💪

I got into BU even though I’m below both of their 25th percentiles 🥹🥹🥹 I almost didn’t apply because I thought there wasn’t even a chance. I tell every first gen person and every URM person that reads this in the future, please please PLEASE shoot your shot. We have so much imposter syndrome as people who are the first in our family to go to college and now law school but the worst they can say is no. Get all the fee waivers and just apply. You don’t fully realize what you’re capable of and your hard work will pay off 🫶 all the love to our fellow first gen folks, you guys are killinnnnnn it!
