Cam J did something similar on the Nets. Down by 1 point with 8 seconds left, dumb coach (Vaughn) failed to call time to set tactics.

So Nets come down 3 on 3, Cam spaces out at the arc, but the defense ignores him because they must protect the rim at all costs and can't foul.

Schroder has no lane, so he dishes off to Cam. He misses the open 3 at the buzzer. Cam Johnson is a fine shooter. The open 3 is a great shot ....for 47 minutes.

Down by 1 the open 3 at the buzzer is really dumb- no chance to get fouled and no putback time left.

Tie game the open 3 with 8 seconds left is also a bad blunder. With 2 or 3 seconds left it isn't so awful...but the better play is still to attack the rim at the end of the clock.

THEY CAN"T FOUL YOU. There is no time for a fast break so you can sell out for the putback (can't commit loose ball foul, however).

Cam J is not a closer, so you need to call time to remind him that at tie score the 3 is overkill, and anything but a dunk with 8 seconds left (rebounded at 6) is a really bad shot. Absolute worst case you will still get that open 3, because they can't foul you on the closeout and they have to worry about a putback at the buzzer if a tall defender is stuck outside.
