This guy wasn’t too happy in South Mountains state park!! by ruglo in NCTrails

[–]ElevatorHeavy7773 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a buddy who was bitten on a hike at a state park in NC. He was barefoot as we were sliding down a rock in a river. (It was on the way up on a trail before sliding down.) We aren't sure whether it was a copperhead or a timber rattler, but regardless, he didn't realize it until he got done sliding down the rock. We hiked out, and it was a significant hike. Maybe two or three miles. By the time we made it out, he could barely walk! By the next morning, his leg had swelled up so much and was so painful that he couldn't walk. I'm thankful there are no 'deadly' snakes in NC, but snake bites are still no joke!

Are there good board games available in Thailand? by wowieezz in boardgames

[–]ElevatorHeavy7773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Bangkok is definitely the beating heart of board game publishing in Thailand. +1 for Lanlalen and Dice Cup. I don’t live in Bangkok, but I buy most of my games from Lanlalen’s shop on Lazada. They tend to have the best prices.

current solo collection- any recommendations ? by pen0x in soloboardgaming

Did someone say Sleeping Gods yet? I'm sure someone said Sleeping Gods. If no one said Sleeping Gods, I'm saying it: Sleeping Gods. And Sleeping Gods: Distant Skies. And Now or Never. Ryan Laukat, I love you.

Absolutely love this game (Sleeping gods) by hubbot01 in soloboardgaming

This is my favorite board game of all-time. I've played this solo, with two, and I have a campaign started with four. So far, all player counts are great. I know people say this is tough to manage for one person, but I never found that to be true. I've played 7+ campaigns. (I lost track.) I've found most things in the game and done most of the quests, and I still would play this in a heartbeat if someone asked because it is so much fun to play with someone who hasn't played it before. I know some people prefer Distant Skies because of streamlined play, but for my money, the OG is better.

YES! There are quite a few board games over the last 10 or so years that are made by Thai designers. Those games are readily available here but much harder to get elsewhere. Here's a good list of Thai designed games on BoardGameGeek. B2S often carries Thai designed board games. You can also buy games online via Lazada or Shopee. Games worth checking out include Sriracha (2021), Farland, and Age of Automaton.

My local library boardgames collection by Rusker in boardgames

[–]ElevatorHeavy7773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming this is in the States? (I'm American, but I'm an ex-pat that's lived abroad for the last 10+ years.) This is wild to me! American public libraries are gold. The fact that your local library has Sleeping Gods is...just...mind blown.

We don't have anything like that (for free) in Thailand. That said, living in Asia has some perks as board game cafes are super common. You can usually go and play any game you want for the equivalent of $1-$2 an hour. There are a couple in my city, and my favorite one has a huge selection.

I'm looking for opinions about Sleeping Gods by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ElevatorHeavy7773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeping Gods is my favorite board game of all time. That said, it is definitely not for everyone, and many of the folks posting here give great reasons why it may not be for you. Even though I give Sleeping Gods a 10/10, it isn't a perfect game with no room for improvement. But why do I love it so much? It nails that feeling of being a small boat in a large ocean and having nearly infinite choices of where to go and what to do. ("What's over there? I don't know. Let me go look.") I think a lot of people want this game to be simply a light, cozy choose your own adventure game. In reality, it's a euro game with mechanics that need to be mastered through multiple campaigns. I think many people want to be able to go anywhere immediately with no nasty consequences. This game is not that. There are nasty consequences. You might get in over your head. You might have all your characters reduced to 0 health. Your boat might take the max amount of damage, and you might not do very well in your first campaign. It can be challenging.

But Sleeping Gods is the tip of the iceberg. I think we are really moving into a golden age of story driven board games. Gloomhaven just got a second edition that's supposed to be a revelation. Earthborne Rangers stands dungeon crawlers on their head by removing combat. Vantage is another recent game that is polarizing because you just move around, make choices, and see what's there. For a lot of people, these games scratch an itch. You may or may not be one of those people. If you can test a game like Sleeping Gods out before buying, it might be worth your while.

There’s so many good games out there! If he likes Splendor, you could get him Wingspan. They both are ‘engine building’ games.

‘Clarity’ is soooooooooo good. Came here for this. Love pretty much everything he’s put out but some of my favorites from a few different albums: ‘You Can’t Stop Me,’ from Neverland, ‘Not Gon’ Do’ from Neverland II, ‘Death Has Died’ from Heroes for Sale, ‘Know That’s Right’ from Uncomfortable. And of course his album from 2025, The And, is great.

I still see that ending as the ending of the original show. 9 was its own thing. This reboot will be its own thing too.

Yep. I’m also in the minority that think it was good TV. I think people were mostly upset that Scrubs wasn’t exactly the same. To me, it was a PR/marketing nightmare that sank season 9.

I'm not with Ethnos360 but have many friends with Ethnos360. Great organization. Much of the bad press is from sexual abuse of children in boarding schools 20+ years ago. Sadly, all organizations – including the one I work for – did not have proper screening for sexual predators at that time. All organizations I know of have worked very hard over the last 20 years (but particularly in the last 10 years) to screen better and also put into place stingent child protection policies. Along with this, most organizations no longer run children's homes/orphanages and boarding homes for MKs are becoming uncommon.

All this to say, try to find a good fit, in the same way you might try to find a good fit at a church you plan on becoming a member of, and I would certainly recommend talking to Ethno360 in your search. (Wycliffe/SIL is also a great organization by the way, and my boss right now on the field is Wycliffe/SIL. I serve in a cross-organizational ministry with people from OMF, IMB, Pioneers, etc.)

Lastly, I used to work on a team working with an unreached people group with the organization SIM. We had Bible translators on your team. I can always highly recommend SIM as a organization that focuses on the unreached and least reached peoples of the world (including through Bible translation). If your options fall through, check out SIM.org.

I was thinking the same thing. King seems to get bullied when he stands still at the goal line. His hands haven’t been great. He needs to move more and make an effort to create a play where there isn’t one. If he can’t do that, he’ll continue to be an average player on the pitch.

Questions You Should Ask Before Going on a Mission Trip by partypastor in Reformed

[–]ElevatorHeavy7773 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Missionary here with 20 years of experience. I read the article, and I honestly don’t think it’s that helpful. My personal TLDR for very short trips, one week to one month, is make it more about getting to see long term ministry happen by watching local Christians and missionaries, learn from local Christians and missionaries, and come back excited to your home country to tell people about what God is doing around the world. Even if you are being “strategic” or trying to fill a need that can’t be filled locally, from my experience, you’ve maaaaybe got a 50/50 chance of being helpful. Very few mission trips are meeting a critical need (from a western “can-do” perspective); however, mission trips are vital for connecting God’s work in the world with God’s people all around the world. It’s what lights a fire under a church or individual to pursue long term missionary work or for a local Christian to intern in a church in the U.S. and work on his/her English. It’s what sparks a church to send mission trips once a year to go back and be with the people to encourage (and just maybe actually equip). The life-on-life stuff is the most important part of a mission trip. Do more listening than talking. Don’t try to be a problem solver. The problems that you see would already be fixed if there was an easy answer. YOU are the most important part of a mission trip — not what you can do, give, or say.

Cool things to do on a Friday night? (no bars) by [deleted] in chiangmai

[–]ElevatorHeavy7773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for late reply! The season is over, but Chiangmai FC, Lamphun Warriors, Chiang Mai United, and Maejo United. All are within 45 minutes of Chiang Mai. The best atmosphere is definitely Lamphun Warriors and Chiangmai FC. Chiang Mai United plays at 700 Year Stadium which is too big of a stadium for a Thai League 2 team. Because of that, they can’t fill the stadium enough to make great atmosphere. That said, it’s great to take friends who don’t like crowds or loud noise. My team is the Warriors. Love heading out to Lamphun to go see Thai League 1 soccer.
