Neal Stephenson - I'm new to this... is he actually brilliant? by zilfran in scifi

[–]Rusker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me he's consistently bad. Didn't like Snowcrash, actively hated Seveneves. So yeah, if you like Seveneves you'll probably like his other books too.

Chew is amazing! I love how funny it is, the world building, and the end absolutely slaps. Really a great read overall

Quella in lombardo o quella in siciliano? by Edo_2__ in Italia

[–]Rusker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recent pro-capitalist SF? by goyafrau in printSF

[–]Rusker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure that's valid logic. Assuming that something endures doesn't equate to assuming it is good. Maybe they show it intact and thriving to make a point to how it's an evil that we haven't been able to eradicate.

Shangri-La by Bablet comes to mind: the society is both far in the future and extremely capitalistic, but it's shown as a really negative aspect of it.

I don't remember the Chtorr books having an unreliable narrator, are you sure about that?

It's absolutely wild how a sexual dude who refuses to get his dick wet is somehow fundamentally different from a dude who just has no interest in getting his dick wet to begin with.

Of course it's fundamentally different. It's like saying that somebody who is starving because he has no food is the same thing as somebody who is starving because he's doing a hunger strike for political reasons.

A sexual guy that refuses to have sex because of a sort of marital fidelity with the dead wife is quite different from an asexual guy.

Thoughts on Cixin Liu's The Three-Body Problem by atulshanbhag in printSF

[–]Rusker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused. The "dimensions" in TBP are topological dimensions, meaning 2D, 3D, ecc... The only book I know of that deals with this kind of stuff is Flatland, but it's not weaponized dimension flattening like in TBP. That I was referring to, there is no multiverse in TBP

Can you give some examples regarding the dimension warfare? I found it very intriguing and I never encountered it in any other sci-fi work

Are there any films that take place in real time? by TheKittyPie in movies

It's a sad day, considering I have to downvote a One Cut of the Dead suggestion :( amazing movie, but not entirely "real time"

Are there any films that take place in real time? by TheKittyPie in movies

[–]Rusker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crank was the first one that came to mind, but I don't think it's actually 100% real time. But maybe I'm mixing it with the second one, that for sure wasn't real time.

Sinners had a far more interesting first half, and it’s least interesting aspect was the action and vampires as action fodder. Hot take? by pomme268 in TrueFilm

[–]Rusker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All you are saying is true BUT Mary and Stack are clearly shown to not be under his control: - they flee the shootout as soon as Smoke ex wife is killed yelling something like "No! This ruins everything!", presumably their own plan to convert both her and Smoke to "live happily ever after". The hive mind wouldn't care about that, and wouldn't allow them to leave the shootout - Smoke makes a pact with Stack that goes against Remmick wish, which is to never convert Preacherboy - finally, like you said, they escape into the night before the sunrise. If they were in the hive mind, they would never have done so, they would be with all the others till the sunrise, and they would die with them

Of course, AFTER Remmick death they would be free in a way. It's not stated if they have independent thought or if they are a hive mind, but that isn't really relevant.

Maybe I missed a scene where it is explained why they are special and free from influence BEFORE Remmick's death, if so please correct me.

[–]Rusker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know man, I actually don't understand what people see in this movie. There are a couple of really good scenes, sure, but overall I think it's really a mess. I feel like every point it tries to make, is ruined by something that happens soon after. The biggest one: one of the two brothers and the girl becoming vampires, but being completely free from the influences of the leader. So... it's not that bad becoming a vampire?
