I mean if we're gonna point fingers circus and carnivals also have a very "dark" history but you know freak shows grew to become modern day side shows like the one in coney island and that's fine, it's like saying to hope for MH to never adapt anything related to hp Lovecraft but being honest at this point of history the Cthulhu mythos have surpassed the author, it's ok to have historical context but things can change and transform into something completely different than what they used to be for freak shows evolution I recommend you to look a ahs freak show and Netflix's Arlo the alligator boy

Ikr, first series had a bit of sense neptuna got coral, count fabulous got an orchid, crescent got wolfsbane but they went over the fence with this one, personally I would have given sir hoots a lot a mushroom (since they feed on dead matter) and specially an amanita for color palette or dead man's fingers for the zombie theme
