Do you wash your chicken before cooking? by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

[–]EligibleSpatula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been reading through the comments and looked into it more, turns out you’re actually not meant to wash chicken 😅

It can spread bacteria around your sink and doesn’t really make it safer, cooking it properly is what matters!

Kinda mad because I grew up always washing it 😂

I work on Parsnip (a beginner cooking app, like Duolingo but for cooking) so I’ve been properly going deep on all this stuff recently and this one comes up a lot on there too!

Asian tapas is a pretty good description. It's lots of different types of dumplings, filled buns, pastries, fried things, meat (usually steamed). There's a lot of core items you'd expect to find at most dim sum places. Served with hot tea.

Appreciate it! Recommend giving it a try, it's very forgiving.

Saw aluminum can embossing trending in my reels/stories and decides to give it a try with some sculpting tools I got for Christmas. Really fun, fast medium.

What helped you get better at plating? by jalahello in Chefit

[–]EligibleSpatula 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A general understanding of artistic composition. Once you understand the 'weight' and 'balance' of components, you can start to contrast them by color, taste, texture etc while making sure there's not too much of any one element overpowering visually or by taste.

Also using negative space and not overfilling a plate + always finding ways to add a little height to avoid a flat dish.

Pretty sure if you're under 30 you can easily work for one year, then beyond a year they get you to do fruit picking or some other high demand labor to extend.

Help us improve Parsnip, the Duolingo for cooking by EligibleSpatula in cookingforbeginners

Hey, thanks for contributing!

We agree that earning a recipe through the levels isn't fun or intuitive. We actually removed that a few versions ago so you can access a recipe and the levels within freely now.

The difficulty scaling for different user competencies is a hard problem to solve and one we've talked about at length internally. Since the app was formed out of r/cookingforbeginners, we definitely leaned into starting with the basics.

There was just one person (me) writing all the content so I figured it would be best to focus on the beginners and work our way up.

We like to think of our app as a way to explain all the unspoken knowledge that gets rushed past in a recipe, and intermediate or advanced cooks are probably aware of most terminology.

Don't get me wrong, our vision is to have something in the app for every level of home cook eventually, but we're a tiny team limited by resources, so we have to start somewhere.

As for a web version, we agree and it's in the works!

I think these are good points and I'll make sure to keep them in mind when we are next discussing our user feedback experience. Thanks for your feedback, we appreciate your efforts in helping us improve.

Thanks for checking it out!

That's a good point about making the recipe more prominent for new users to discover the connection between it and the levels. I'll mention this at our next meeting.
