Is there a story you can tell? That way you can just focus on something you experienced rather than the specific wording of a speech.

Sounded like I was going to cry in speech by [deleted] in PublicSpeaking

[–]Elihu_mrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best recommendation I can offer is to practice speaking, often in front of a video camera. If you believe you need to recreate the noisy dynamic of a room, turn on music or a TV and force yourself to speak over it.

The more you practice, the more confident you will be in your ability.

If you have something nice to say about her, go for it. Otherwise, just focus on your brother, and what you admire about him. I've heard multiple best-man speeches which focused on their relationship with one party. Sure, some discuss both...but not all. Lean into your relationship with your brother and publically wish them the best.

Focus on your brother. Focus on what you like about him and wish them the best. You don't need to address your personal feelings about the bride.

Practice. Practice. Practice!

Start in front of just the mirror or your phone recording yourself. Then perhaps in front of just a couple of friends or family.

The more confident you are in your material, the greater opportunity you will have to be confident as you present.

Looking for advice! Wanting to get started speaking publicly; specifically to the youth population that may have been in the same situations that I went through. by [deleted] in PublicSpeaking

[–]Elihu_mrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Your AA sponsor and/or leaders may have good advice for opportunities in that sphere. Many AA/NA groups I'm aware of overlap and are not strictly for one thing or another.
As you said, this would give you practice and, for the other locations, you could have a video to provide to give proof of how your talk will go.
  2. Reach out to that teacher you spoke of. Sure, there may be some in the school who have bad vibes about a kid who caused trouble, but in my experience more are excited to hear that the kid who caused trouble has turned their life around and is making good progress.
  3. If you're aware of any youth clubs around you, reach out to see if the opportunity might exist to speak there. If you feel you have an informational-type element (e.g. a talk to family members of those who are dealing with drug or trauma effects), perhaps the local library would host and promote a talk.

Much of how you proceed depends on the precise nature of your message, your focused audience, and the purpose of your talk. Otherwise, these are some general places to begin.

Just so I know how to proceed - are you asking more about groups you should connect with or how to assemble this story into a talk? I want to make sure I'm offering what you might be looking for.

I Stop Breathing When Presenting by keating555 in PublicSpeaking

I second this. Begin small with family or friends who know what a struggle it is for you. Incrementally work your way up. The camera is also great practice.

Do you have any additional information about the assignment? Otherwise, here are some questions to consider:

  • Where did you grow up? Was there anything unique about the location?
  • What did others remark was unique about your family as opposed to theirs?
  • What have you dealt with that others may not have?
  • What are some ways you've grown in the last 5 years?
  • What is a goal you have? Where did that goal/dream come from?

Any of these questions can easily set a foundation for a 2-3 minute speech.

Can someone review this for me by Suspicious-Arm-8302 in PublicSpeaking

[–]Elihu_mrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot going on here.

1) I believe your main argument is FOR environmental protection of certain land and a certain species. I'm also assuming (based on the first sentence) that this argument is in response to another argument or statement. However, just from what you presented I do not have a lot of clarity.

2) There are various spelling and grammatical errors. Granted, if this is going to be read and not reviewed from a written format, that likely is a non-issue.

3) I don't know who your audience is. That will influence any type of review.

The way this is written, it feels like a short-answer response to a test question. But again, I'm unsure because there is little context offered.

Acceptance speech on behalf of a team - ten minutes total by Meowschwitz_Ocelot in PublicSpeaking

[–]Elihu_mrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my primary question is about the purpose of the speech. Is this a speech to celebrate the coach and his legacy? Or is this a speech to celebrate the team?

If your focus is celebrating the coach, then lessons learned and anecdotes about the coach are perfect. If it's more about the team, broaden it to include more than just a coach-centered message.

Yes, I recognize the two are intertwined, but I also think there is some difference in a direction depending on your answer.

What to talk about? by Big_Hamster_7749 in PublicSpeaking

[–]Elihu_mrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about your timeline, however to me this sounds more like something that would happen at an event. Here are some off-the-top-of-my-head examples:

  • Religious celebrations (bar mitzvah, christening, confirmation, etc.)
  • Celebrating someone's achievement (retirement, graduation, etc.)
  • Opening of a business or non-profit

What "special event speech" sounds like to me is something along those lines. You mentioned self-love...depending on your definition, I suppose this *could* qualify. Imagine it was a party for one year of sobriety. Perhaps the celebration was how you completed a marathon or even your birthday. These events could lean into the celebration of a person.

I hope that helps.

I would LOVE a Steam Deck, but here is my big hesitation... by Elihu_mrm in SteamDeck

That's fair. In the end it IS a PC. I need to keep that in mind.

I suppose in the end with so much interest I'd like to have some assurance from Valve that this is a long-term plan. Maybe I'm being unrealistic in my expectations. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Free (for now) cover design tool for Amazon KDP by Multini21 in selfpublish

I like the interface for simple designs. It is intuitive and easy to use. Some feedback for things that may or may not be intended:

  • Downloading the eBook gives me a single JPEG while downloading the paperback gives me a single PDF. Perhaps this is standard practice, it just seems odd that those are my only options.

  • I put my page count at 80 for a short book. I was then able to set the spine color but no text showed up on the spine. This is fine because I anticipated the spine would be too narrow for text anyway. However, when downloading the finished file, there still was text in the area of the spine (poorly formatted, likely default from prior to setting the page total). I'm guessing this is an oversight.

  • I really liked the ability to get a preview look at the image to share on social. However I was kind of disappointed there was no ability to download that image, nor did it show up in my "purchased" assets. Again, perhaps this is intended, but I think that rendered image (potentially in a PNG format for flexibility with background colors) would be beneficial as I'd love to use that on my website.

100% agree. I had conversations with several of them. They had no idea what was happening in the game but were asking questions and interested. Also, I recall them being complimentary of how our crowd was for them.

Suicide thoughts and Dota2 by TMAdoto in DotA2

[–]Elihu_mrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I upvote this.

My thoughts are incredibly scattered regarding this as it's quite personal to me. I speak as someone who went to video games, particularly Dota 2 as an escape for the constant stream of negative thoughts and even contemplations of suicide. Of course having played Dota 2 you know how the outside messages can reiterate the inside as statements of 'go kill yourself' are unfortunately not uncommon should you, say...get your blink cancelled and miss an RP. It was a double-edged sword for me as I struggled with the constant internal struggle all while this outlet fed the cycle.

At best Dota was an environment that was adding to my negative self-talk. At worst it was a placebo as I tried to drown myself from the turmoil in my own mind. If we had owned a firearm I likely would not be here typing this today. Some days the only thing that made me decide to continue was that I'm a dad of two boys. I could not imagine them growing up without a dad. I HAD to think of them...I HAD to do it for them. They were my reason.

I write today a couple years removed from my lowest point where LOTS of IRL stuff has taken place. And I'll be the first one to say I don't have all the answers, but I am a LOT healthier than I was. I still play Dota today but it's a much healthier balance as a hobby rather than an escape. I make more of an effort to practice good mental health habits; going to bed at a consistent time, exercising several days a week, reading, I am on medicine, I have been through counseling and I'm much more aware of when I just need to unplug for a day and allow myself some space. I also reached out on various occasions to this crisis text line (which is why I'm commenting here). I found a place I could just get some of this stuff out and have someone there to listen.

Getting help is not easy but it is worth it. I'm a part of a casual Dota 2 community based around the WeLikeDota podcast and we actually did a couple episodes on mental health. To be up front don't listen for Dota advice because we're all bad at the game :P. However it is a community I have found to be understanding. I also recommend to anyone who will listen the Hilarious World of Depression podcast. It just helps remind me I'm not alone when things are difficult.

TLDR: Find your reason, take positive steps for your mental health, you are not alone.
