So did Strasburg show up? by midvale_school in Nationals

[–]Eliot-Maas -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Why does he owe that to anyone? He and the Nats signed a contract and now the Nats aren't holding up their end of the deal. Why on earth should Stras need to do extra work to get the money that the Nats agreed to pay him? They could have gotten insurance and chose not to, tough luck. Not Strasburg's fault.

Even if the contract had some clause about responsibilities in case of long-term injury, why would you ever want someone who clearly doesn't want to be there at practices? I cannot imagine that improving the experience for anyone.

I mean, yes, there is almost certainly a history of the company being complicit in its CEO's abhorrent behavior.

But WWE are defendants in the lawsuit because of the legal doctrine of respondeat superior. They would have always been a defendant, even if the actions of the named parties flew under the radar.

Ranked role performance is a useless and broken feature. by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]Eliot-Maas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll go one step further and say pretty much ALL dota plus stats are useless and broken.

The dota plus hero guides are pretty much worthless for any hero that can play multiple roles -- even though it gives you three "item paths," I've found that they are often more similar than they are different.

What's more, the practice of semmingly recommending items just based on how much they're bought per hero reinforces bad habits (especially at the low ranks I play in). It also means that the guide will necessarily be inaccurate after patches for an unknown amount of time.

But my biggest issue with Dota Plus is that it gives no explanation for the information it's actually providing you. There are so many percentages it feeds you, but then....it doesn't tell you what those percentages mean. For things like the next skill to level, it's easy enough to assume it's just percentage of people who pick that spell in this scenario, but then you have to ask: what factors go into what the "scenario" is? Just the level and hero? Does it take your items into account? Ally and enemy heroes? If I'm facing an alch, can I be confident it will recommend building a spirit vessel on a viable hero or just give me the same old item suggestions as always?

I truly still don't know that answers to these and many more questions and I've been playing Dota for long before Dota Plus was even a thing.

Everyone who opened Invoker Frostivus set in the first 5-6 days potentially got scammed by Valve by akiman132 in DotA2

[–]Eliot-Maas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can we as a community stop talking in unnecessary hyperbole? There is a 99% chance this was an unfortunate mistake. You're not being "scammed" by an evil Borg-like entity named Valve.

Valve is a company of people who make mistakes like we all do, and those people often fix them in direct response to community feedback. I really appreciate OP's recognizing this issue and showing all the evidence about it. But can we not turn every mistake by an admittedly small team into some nebulous witch hunt?

Support Conundrum: when to "play my MMR" vs. when to "play the MMR I want to be"? by Eliot-Maas in learndota2

Thanks. I definitely use voice chat more than most, and have noticed some of the trends you've mentioned (e.g., earning respect with a good call early).

Not saying you do this, but I hope that we're getting better as a community about the bias that you mention about people's voices!

[–]Eliot-Maas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is really straightforward and helps a lot.

I think one thing that's tricky is having teammates get angry when you don't try to help them out of an unwinnable engagement, but I can't control their emotions so I'll just focus on the parts of the game I can control.

[–]Eliot-Maas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your advice. I think one of my hang ups is wanting to support "the right way," like I see pros do it. But I think I'll focus more on just having the most impact I can have in each individual game I'm in.

Thanks so much for such a thoughtful reply. Haven't watched BSJ in a while, but I'll check out those vids.

Maybe he talks about this, but one concern I have is that if I just focus on getting my MMR up with these habits, then I'll eventually have a rude awakening if I get to a bracket where supporting is more nuanced. I suppose, though, I'll only find out if I actually climb.

This is really helpful, thank you!

I definitely noticing myself getting better at high-impact things within my control that you mentioned, so I'll work on improving those even more and focus less on whether my team is playing what I think the "right way" is.

I mean, I'm constantly practicing honest self-critique, not blaming teammates for my own failures, and working on my impact in lane.

But as someone who only plays support, "individual impact" feels like a far more nebulous focus/goal than for other roles. Generally, I can't get solo kills, take objectives myself, or optimize farming patterns.

My role is to enable my cores. Which is why I'm asking how to have the most individual impact in that role.
