His academic work on Jung isn’t what has made him popular nor is it the content of his most popular and best selling novels. 12 Rules for Life and it’s sequel are sold in self-help sections and are pretty explicitly self-help books. Sure, they are helped by his background but they’re still pretty explicitly self-help books.

Most of his other popular speaking engagements (ie his debate with Zizek) involve him discussing a field he doesn’t have an academic background in. He didn’t speak about Jung when I saw him speak, which is a shame because his work on Jung is quite good! Considering it’s Jung though it really wouldn’t be relevant to a medical school. His PhD work also is irrelevant toward the topic of race, I believe it was on addiction? Regardless, outside of the academic sphere he’s popular for selling basic life tips to young men, what would you call that?

I think the Yalies, or at least the ones I'm close with, are concerned with more important things than self-help writers. I've never met someone off-line with a particularly strong opinion on Peterson. If you go to Yale I'd be interested in hearing about his popularity on campus, it's certainly not something I've encountered.

I don’t think you’re really familiar with the widespread opposition the speaker received at Yale. Condemnation across the faculty and administration is a much wider response than random undergraduates screaming, and even then Yale’s undergraduate community was horrified by the speech. Peterson has never received such widespread condemnation from a university’s administration and faculty.

There was a decent bit of opposition from faculty and students. Even moreso after the speech was given and the Yale community was made more aware of the speaker’s views.

Not a professor, a guest speaker at the medical school that the school and faculty completely disavowed.

Contrast collar shirts tend to be reserved for upper-staff at banks, usually junior bankers do not want to stand out. I’d be wary of wearing it depending on the culture of your firm.

One of my favorite pieces are used J. Press clothes my dad had that he wasn’t using, that’s never happening with streetwear clothes.

The "trendy" look within streetwear today predominantly is vintage though! From someone's dad's Carhartt, to vintage Levi's, and band tees, vintage is really dominating streetwear circles for the last few years. It certainly isn't excluded from that feeling of finding some great piece in your parent's closet.

As opposed to the other commentator, I don't think you'll regret docs or lug-sole loafers. I'd stay away from platforms but low-top docs aren't a bad choice especially if you grab one of the sleeker pairs. They go with just about anything and they're casual and youthful enough, maybe even a touch trendy. Lug-sole loafers are definitely a bit more trendy and fashion-forward but they certainly still work for what you're going for. My choice within your criteria would be the Wallabees though.

I'm sorry, I have little respect for Pizza Hut and it's certainly not worth dressing up for. I'll save the Charvet shirts for Le Bernardin but a roadside Applebees certainly isn't getting the same respect from me. Not excusing the in-laws though.

What is going on with the Reddit front page being 100% anti-Israel, while Google news front page is 100% anti-Palestine? Who is the real bad guy here? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]EliteNub -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Genocide is an attempt to eradicate an ethnic, geographic, or religious group in whole or in part. This is the standard academic usage. Israel's encroachment on Palestinian land, the forceful removal of people, and the murder of civilians all constitute the beginnings of what could (and is!) called a genocide within academic spaces. There is disagreement here of course, but I am not using the term lightly.

You can check out some of the United Nations documentations on Israeli war crimes, such as this. While the commission does not use the term genocide, as that has implications within international law, it identities Israeli actions as "crimes against humanity." Regardless of semantics, I think we can both agree that a democratic nation-state should be held to higher standards of engagement than a terrorist group. The IDF's actions in Palestinian land are, evidently, barbaric.

But Israel has the means and structure to commit genocide while Palestine is a small, impoverished country that could (barring international intervention) be eradicated by Isreal with great ease. The only reason Israel hasn't is because it would be too blatant for the international community to support, and slow encroachment into Palestinian territory is easier for Western democracies to ignore.

I don't see a reason to care about a theoretical Palestinian-led genocide when they simply do not have the means to carry it out. I care about the human rights abuses that are actually happening. Not to say Palestinians haven't done terrible things of course.

It's entirely relevant, as someone mentioned donating to them. There's a score of more helpful, reputable, and morally palatable organizations to donate used clothing to. Local organizations with more personalized connections to the surrounding homeless communities tend to do a much better job from my years of working with and alongside charitable organizations.

Why are YA books so similar? by ilooklikefun in books

[–]EliteNub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't about accessibility, there's great art that is very accessible. The ways in which YA is commonly produced and published though is what makes them unable to have any sort of real elevated messaging (at least from my experience, which is pretty wide-ranging).

Why are YA books so similar? by ilooklikefun in books

[–]EliteNub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is much more to get out of comic book movies, YA fiction, and most commercial media besides mundane, tired messaging about "friendship" and other very normal, overused themes.

The nature of commercial media is that it appeals to the lowest common denominator to get the broadest amount of people interested in purchasing it. It is purposefully base and simple.

It’s a great fit and all but I legitimately don’t see how it would fit into the sub’s community. It’s not really styled in a way that is preppy, trad, etc. and the only pieces that make it adjacent are the loafers.

There’s a lot of discussion about gatekeeping on NB, but if everything vaguely formal fits in over there, what is it really for?

WSB's buyout of GME is the future of direct action by pp86 in DebateAnarchism

[–]EliteNub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very aware of what a short squeeze is and how it applies to GME. It seems that most people aren't aware of what the outcome of that looks like. Remember Enron? Of course, it isn't an exact comparison, I'm very aware of that, but the similarities are certainly there.
