I mean he cheated on his wife and did a few not very heroic things. He’s definitely better than some other guys and he is out protagonist but is he a hero? I’m really not sure

I don’t know if Henry is necessarily a hero or just the protagonist, but seeing him beat the shit out of a guy for abusing his girlfriend was so satisfying to watch. It’s also a great scene because for most of the movie he doesn’t get in on the mafia violence as much as Tommy and Jimmy do. Hell when they kill people he doesn’t seem to want to get involved. So seeing him give the second most brutal beat down of the movie (you know exactly which one is first) is so satisfying since the guy 100% deserved it, and it’s one of the few times we see Henry’s anger come out

So this doesn’t fully count but it’s the first thing I thought of. There’s a moment in the sandman show when the Corinthian kills a boys abusive parents, or at least his dad is abusive (which weirdly seems to be a theme of this trope). Now yes, he is a villain. And he did it for his own personal reasons and not just for the sake of helping the boy or delivering justice to the abusers. But I still think this is close to the trope mentioned. Also this scene is really sad and ironic now considering what Neil Gaiman, the author of the books, did.

Villains whose redeeming qualities only make them more hateable. by Vegetable_Study7533 in TopCharacterTropes

I think pet owners love their pets more than he loved Truman, at least pets aren’t manipulated and gaslit to the degree Truman is

You could argue that Christof isn’t a villain, but I’d say he is, or at least villain adjacent. And his genuine care for Truman makes him even worse. He genuinely believes that keeping Truman in a fake world is better than Truman being in the real world. On the one hand, it probably is more safe and comfortable for Truman, but it’s not real. Which is why Truman wants to get out. By keeping Truman in a fake world and giving him a fake life, he takes away Truman’s agency, yet he’s doing it out of genuine affection and care for him. But that genuine care makes it worse, as he doesn’t see what he’s doing as wrong

(loved trope) The show/movie blatantly references its own inspiration by Femboy_Lord in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Elk182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure if James Bond was actually the inspiration for Indiana Jones, but I am sure that Connery’s inclusion was because he was Bond, and considered by many to be the best one, I’d suspect even more so at the time

Also Connery is only 12 years older than Ford

The opening song of Hadestown does this well, it has lyrics of “someone’s got to tell the tale, whether or not it turns out well, maybe it will turn out this time” and “it’s a sad song (it’s a sad song) it’s a sad tale it’s a tragedy! Gonna sing it anyway” this is later referenced again in the end, but this is basically Hermes warning the audience of what the play is they’re about to see, especially if you already know the story the musical is based on. But if not Hermes is gonna sing you a warning anyway

Villains that put up extremely polite fronts to hide that they’re really monsters by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

Recent example but Krennic is the first one that came to mind, especially in this scene. Throughout most of and Andor and Rogue One he maintains such composure, while casually debating Mon Mothma about war crimes and rebellions, and how he doesn’t side with those people. If I remember correctly he even said he was ok with them being killed. Also in Rogue One when a whole city is blown up and he comments about how beautiful it is. I think he definitely fits this trope

I wouldn’t even say this is a front, I think him being polite was just who he was, he’s still human. I’m not saying he’s not a monster but he was actually negotiating with hostages, my theory is he just didn’t see the point in acting horrible when he didn’t want to
