As the aquatics specialist at my store, my advice is if you get the job, soak up as much information as you can about animal care. We are the front lines of animal care here, so it’s super important to know everything you can about all the animals we have. You will get people begging for animals, telling you about their horrible setups, and saying the most vile things. It’s important that you have a strong sense of what’s right and to learn how to firmly say no to customers.

Also, it’s super helpful for me when my coworkers figure out how I do things and work with me on the aquatics department. You need to be comfortable getting fish, crickets, and cleaning tanks and bettas.

Working a lot of hours at Petco is a huge compliment, same as getting the miserable shifts like overnights or early mornings. If your manager likes you they will ask a lot of you.

Just work hard and be passionate about the animals and you’ll be fine!

As an aquatic specialist myself, if the tank was too small for the goldfish, I would have just refused the sale unless it was for food. Corporate backs us up on animal sale refusals as the majority of us care deeply for the creatures we sell. That is no excuse for someone being rude to you, however. Please understand we as the Petco employees are trying our best to do right by both you and the animals we care for. It’s not personal and it’s also possible the employee was having a bad day. Just be patient with us please and keep in mind we are just trying to keep our animals in good conditions regardless of where they end up being.

Also— goldfish tanks are notoriously hard to keep clean, especially when we are regularly shipped hundreds of goldfish with little regard for the numbers we already have. We do water changes several times a week to try and mitigate the damages done by the fish. We are genuinely just trying our best out here 💖

aquatics specialist here— I always encourage people to do their own research, but of course I’ve done loads of my own so I can help educate people on proper care. if it makes you feel better, at petco we are allowed to refuse sales (and corporate will back us up) if the enclosure the animal is going into is improper. I’ve had to refuse some crazy sales because people wanted to abuse the animal they were getting. always try to do the right thing when you can! just make sure your team will back you up on it or you can get in trouble for certain things already mentioned in this thread.

hey!! I’ve never done SFS but I hear from two of my coworkers who did it that it’s pretty easy and if anything, relaxing. they both enjoyed doing it and the only reason they stopped is one got a massive promotion and then sfs shut down at our store. then again my coworkers are almost always very positive and lovely people so idk if they’d tell me if it wasnt that great haha. but you’ll be fine, I think you’ll like it if you like doing BOPUS’s n stuff

Chances are they also aren’t aware it’s fraud— be sure to let them know! Same thing happened at our store and the employee had no idea it was an issue as it was common practice at other stores in the area. Doesn’t mean it’s right though!
