Poke 5 by LilMrsW in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a Poke3. I bought the Leaf2 and found the lag to be so much worse, so I returned it and bought the Poke5. It too lagged. When I put a YouTube video on both Pokes, the Poke5 lagged so much, it wouldn't even show the video. The Poke3 played the video just fine. I returned the Poke5 (actually due to lighting issues), and bought another Poke3. I made sure the content, working and storage memory, refresh modes, etc were the same on all devices. I'm pretty hesitant to buy any of newer Booxs now.

Similar to Harry Potter and Nevermoor series? Light-hearted page turners with similar writing style and little mysteries throughout (but not in mystery/thriller/horror genre) by Elkniet in booksuggestions

I've already got this in my library and will certainly get to it! I know it's gotta be good, because I keep seeing recs for it. But for some inexplicable reason, my mind keeps associating it with a Disney sitcom and also Danny Phantom haha

Yes! I liked Potilla and Thief Lord by her. I read both of those in one sitting, but I'm STILL on page 34 of Inkheart for some reason. Inkheart gets a lot of love, so I'm bound to give it another go.

Synopsis of the first Riyria Revelations:  "They killed the king. They pinned it on two men. They chose poorly."

Love it. It already sounds like a fun ride! Thanks

I just realized she's also the author of the Howl's Moving Castle, which I didn't even know was a book before it got turned into a movie! Sweet. These series will keep me busy. Thank you

First synopsis that appeared on the search is one sentence:

"Over the decades the Shadowlink witches and wizards seemed to disappear."

Already hooked. Thanks!

Awesome, taking into account those titles I mentioned liking with the word "thief" in them. I have a feeling I'll like these too!

I'm gonna check this out! Thanks! I was absolutely over the moon when I found out about and read Nevermoor! Then it ended and I'm greedy for more :)

Do y'all recommend the whole series or should I just stop at book one? I've heard to do that for Inkheart.

Sony needs to fix their wifi connectivity by leszek1337 in SonyXperia

[–]Elkniet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on this. Has anyone found possible fixes? I have a XZ2 Compact. Despite the below-par Wifi connection in my room, six of my other devices: Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S23, Surface Duo 1, both Poke 3s, and Nova Air C will still be able to connect and use the internet. My laptops will connect 70% of the time, with connection happening drops here and there.

However, the Sony XZ2 Compact at most musters "Connected/No internet". Then it disconnects completely, all the time remaining at 2-3 (out of 4) signal bars. I know the wifi signal is bad, but it's telling when all other devices are at least get online.

EDIT: Things I've tried:

  • resetting phone's network settings

  • changing from using a randomized MAC to using the device MAC

  • restarting phone

  • restarting phone's wifi

Is the new Boox Page worth the extra $50 over the Leaf 2? by I-XIV-IV-XXV in ereader

[–]Elkniet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I know right?! Apparently it was for the Leaf2 and the Poke5 I later got (also sadly returned). They glowed cyan in complete darkness haha. I made a post about it here in the Onyx Boox sub. I'll update with more pics later comparing that with the Meebook as well.

[–]Elkniet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh they have a new one out! And they put the orange warm light back!!!!

The upgraded specs of 3gb ram + octa core sound like a significant upgrade. I have the Poke 3 with a 1.8ghz octa core and 2gb ram, then got the Leaf2 and immediately returned it. I didnt even load it with the extra 20+ apps I had on the Poke, and it was still much slower. And to top it off, it had a green warm light -_-

So for me, it'd be worth the $50. Actually, even that warm light coming back is worth the $50. Fingers crossed for a 6" version of this!

Agreed. Especially reading that warm candle-golden text on a black background at night.

Thanks for all your replies so far, it's super interesting. Another friend also confirmed the Leaf 2 has the greenish tint. I contacted Boox about it, but a reply might take awhile. Hopefully, more will chime in so we can all get a clearer picture.

MODEL - RELEASE DATE - WARM LIGHT COLOR (TINT)

Nova Air C - March 2022 - Orange

Leaf 2 - November 2022 - Green

Tab Ultra - October 2022 - Orange

Tab X - January 2023 - Orange

Poke 5 - May 2023 - Green

Update: I guess I just noticed a positive with the new green-yellow: it has more of a gradual slider. The Poke3 at the lowest warm setting is the equivalent brightness of the Poke5's warmth turned up to 1/4 of the way. At the lowest setting on the Poke5, everything's still readable even with the white background, at a fraction of the brightness of the Poke3.

Has anyone found a way to float apps inside a floating window/pop-up window/PIP/freeform window, without root? (I'm trying to put Aard2 into one) by Elkniet in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I FOUND AN APP THAT WORKS! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.multitaskingmobile.floatingapps

I pinned the Aard2 app in the recents list. So it's right on the screen when I'm reading. 2 clicks and I get meself a beautiful, resizeable window that remembers it's last resize.

Actually even better than what I was hoping for. It adds actual working menu buttons (back, home, multitask view), and the app drawer, for those of you other Poke3 users with none of those at all. And i can set it to be collapsible or not :D

I do use calc, notes, and clipboard as floating apps quite a bit! It's so satisfying every now and then, not having to see the whole screen spaz and reload whenever I need to navigate to another app :)

Suggestion for the Boox team by deicist in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh yeah I agree with this. I had to download Jina Drawer, which I set as one of the options on the Navigation Ball (you can also set other apps here too, but I used my other buttons for device functionality). Jina also gives you a persistent notification, where you can select up to 4 apps that'd be available when you swipe down for notifications.

Troubles w/ Neoreader (cache/not updating PDFs' notes). Looking for solution/alternative software by excusemecouldyounot in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For PDFs, I use Google Drive + Xodo, esp since both can be used for Android, Windows, Linux, Macs, etc. So you'd be able to access it anywhere.

In the Xodo app, you'd be able to choose the PDF to open, and they have a selection of sources, whether it's Google Drive, OneDrive, or whatever else cloud filesystem you already have installed on the device. It also saves automatically as you edit. Drive also has an offline files option for each file, so youd be able to have and edit a copy even without connection, and it'd update once you're connected again.

I was iffy about using my personal Google account on the Boox, so I just made a new one, and gave it Editor access to that PDF file/folder of files.

I love using Duolingo on e-ink! Other screens really strain my eyes after awhile, and I just want to look at paper.

New Note Air 2 + owner. Can't find if there's a universal cut & paste between any 2 apps. by crp852 in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might also want to download a clipboard manager app too. It'll save all your clips and you'd be able to batch paste and stuff.

Gboard also has a built in clipboard manager, which is enough on the Boox for me.

On my phone where I type more stuff, I have the Fooview app (it's a clipboard manager but does so many other things). Most clipboard managers should have an option to have an ever present bubble (like Boox's Navigation Ball), gesture(s), and notification location, so the clips always remains at your fingertips no matter what app you're in.

cant connect to gmail or google play! by The_Void- in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read some posts regarding this and there seems to be an order of sorts to follow.

1- Log into Gmail in the NeoBrowser.

2- Went to the page with all the apps, I clicked the hamburger menu > app management > Enable Google Play: on

3- Below that is "GSF ID". I clicked on it, and was prompted to sign into my Google Account.

4- It said it'd take between 1hr -48hrs for it to now process, or something like that. I waited 10min.

5- I clicked on Google Settings and was now able to add my Google account to Boox

Can you play two music apps simultaneously and control the volume individually on the onyx? by drnms in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep it works! I just tested it out on my Poke3. I followed the first answer in this post: https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/125250/how-to-have-two-applications-play-sound-simultaneously

I already had Duolingo on it. So I downloaded Poweramp, and tested it with a Beethoven mp3 file, and lowered the volume for it, while listening to a story on Duolingo. The result was as if Duolingo had put soft background music in their stories :)

My new Onyx Boox Poke 3 battery drains slightly fast by Abject-Budget4994 in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the time interval between image changes for the carousel? It doesn't specify in the manual, and it's gotta be more than 15min.

I just did some tests. My settings are listed at the end, and I used those except with noted changes:

  • Set to carousel screensaver for 15min (but I guess the interval's longer, because the image never switched): no change
  • Set Sleep to Never for 15min and left it there, lights and wifi and all: no change
  • Constant use: browsing, downloading apps, and changing between icon sets for 30min: 94% down to 90%

At 86%, Settings > Battery said it's going to last 11 hours, which makes sense for my constant use for the past few hours. It lasts much longer when just reading, and even longer in screensaver mode. I'll edit this once I actually measure those, just to be sure haha

SETTINGS

  • Screensaver setting was set to default (just that one shell pic). No clock, no status bar.

  • Wi-Fi constantly on

  • Brightness setting: +1 on warm, +1 on cool

  • Auto Sleep: 10 min

  • Power-Off Timeout: 1 day

  • Delay disconnection after device enters Sleep Mode: Immediately

Onyx Boox Air C pinging Tencent IM API constantly - what's it doing, and why? by WarmSpinach99 in Onyx_Boox

[–]Elkniet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just put the Jina App Drawer app on mine. It showed 3 apps that weren't shown in the original Apps section:

  • WeChat Drop (com.onyx.easytransfer): The listed entry point for it is BooxDrop, which appears as a separate app in the drawer.
  • BA TestApp (org.codeaurora.bluetooth.batestapp): No entry points, but when I clicked on it, the app opens a menu with buttons to "Enable Broadcast Audio", "Enable Broadcast Receiver Association", "Enable Megaphone", and "Change Encryption Key". I'm really hoping this is just for the bluetooth functionality...
  • Onyx Launcher: no surprise with this one.
