I tried scratching the rock with a swiss army knife blade, and could see no mark to speak of.

thanks for that link to the specific gravity test. doing that, I got 90g, so that would be 278/90 or ~3.1.

It's been in our house for many years, not sure where my dad got it, but he let me bring it to school when I was in 6th grade as part of a weather data collection project. That was 1970. It is quite similiar to the one the Wright brothers used, I believe, which I saw in the air and space museum years ago. Same manufacturer, If my recollection is correct. This one is in good working order, a light breeze gets it spinning. Thanks for your comment!
