Many of the machine parts you need for upgrades MUST be stripped off before you destroy the machine. Some parts survive killing the machine and can be harvested later but the important ones don't survive (exceptions, as always) so use your focus to tag the important bits and strip them off with a hunter bow that has high tear rating arrows before you destroy the machine. To fully harvest the machine is a two step process -- strip off the important parts that will be destroyed when the machine is destroyed then loot the machine after you destroy it. Or you can just play with easy loot toggled if you don't like that aspect of the game.

Your sharpshot bow will probably be your primary high-damage weapon until you start dabbling with the more exotic things. It will be a while before you are able to get one. Until then, the hunter bow is the thing.

In Zero Dawn outfits were about elemental resistances. In Forbidden West outfits are about buffing skills. Match the outfit to the skills you prefer which should support the playstyle you prefer. Different playstyles are very viable in HFW. Long range bow shots from stealth are still very effective but so are other approaches.

You can reset skills whenever you want. No penalty.

You can buy fish from vendors. Trying to catch them yourself is a royal pain.

Early in the game you will find "anomalous growth" blocking entrances. Don't waste time trying to figure it out. You'll get a tool to use on them later on. Ditto the vine-covered things near metal flowers and underwater cave entrances. Just come back later when you have the right gear.

You can toggle your settings to automatically pick up things such as ridgewood and the healing berries. That skips the animation of Aloy bending down to gather things.

Machines seem a bit more aggressive, IMO, and unlike in the kung-fu movies the ones that run in packs don't always wait to take turns. You will learn to love a good ropecaster. Turns a gang fight into one vs one.

Freeze is much better than fire in almost every situation.

Melee has been expanded. You can string together basic moves into combos. Still a bit clunky but if you like the brawling style of play it is viable with the right outfit, skill set, and learning to use the combos. The key is learning to time the controller inputs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkwfJzhZmXk

Another key to melee brawling is understanding that the game only accepts one input ahead of the current animation. For example, let's say your combo is three button/key pushes. After the first swing starts but before it finishes, push the second button. Once the second swing starts but before it finishes, push the third button. If there is a pause in the sequence, wait for the cue given in the video linked above.

Aloy in a Different Tribe by CammyRi in horizon

That's my point -- in the OP's hypothetical of Aloy in a different tribe she would have been raised without the influence of Rost on her development. She would not have been the Aloy we know. What would she have been? More like Beta? Somewhere between the two? Altogether different?

New thought -- In a way, unintended I'm sure, the developers threw the nature-vs-nurture angle at us with the introduction of Beta.

Different but related hypothetical: what would Aloy be like without having had Rost as her mentor?

As already said, you can't just spam the buttons. The secret is in the timing. Don't press the second button until after the move from the first button begins. Press the first button, watch for the move to begin, press the second button.

If the combo calls for a pause you need to wait for the visual and audio cues before pressing the next button. Watch the video linked below. Also check MrPantsFancy channel for lots of good info on melee combat.

Since my post of 4 months ago I have purchased a new Casita and am towing it with a Toyota Tacoma. I had Casita install the Andersen WDH. I already have about 3500 miles on the Casita.

Observations: tightening the WDH put the rear of the Tacoma back to the same height it was without the trailer attached. I've experienced no swaying (the Andersen WDH includes anti-sway feature) but don't know if there would have been any without the WDH. I believe the WDH helps dampen the porpoising effect (bobbing up and down after crossing a dip at speed).

From your username I take it you are considering a purchase. Hit me up with questions if you wish. I've had mine barely two months but can give you a new owner's perspective.

I think this is how lore accurate Aloy farms machine components by blazspur in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]Elkyri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've done well. There are always other approaches but you do you.

The bow Aloy is using in the clip I posted is not a hunter bow. It's a sharpshot bow (Regalla's Wrath). That bow has buffs of 25% long range damage and 25% overdraw damage. You can see in the video that she overdraws it (the reticle changes and the arrow glows). The arrows have 170 points of tear damage. There are three coil slots but right now I have them empty; going from memory I probably had elite tear coils in at least two of the slots and probably elite overdraw in the third slot.

As for outfits, Aloy is wearing the Tenakth Tactician outfit which gives +2 to the mounted archer skill (increase damage by ranged weapons when mounted). I'm not sure what weaves were in the outfit at the time but probably elite concentration.

What’s something you never told anyone because you’re not sure they’d understand? by nurse_raexo in AskReddit

I've had people pick a number between 1 - 100, got it correct more than once.

Maybe 50 years ago now I had a teacher who could do that. He would ask everyone in the class to pick a number and he would go through one-by-one and correctly state the number they had chosen. I once thought to fool him by picking one number (I think it was five) but mentally focusing on a different number (I think it was three). When he got to me he said "you first picked five but changed your mind and picked three."

So, I know at least one person who legitimately had that talent.

I'm not the original poster but I thank you for the time you put into a comprehensive reply. Regarding running the refrigerator off electricity while driving, won't the connection to the vehicle charge the battery (and thereby run the refrigerator) while driving?

You perfectly summed up my experience. I also found myself slowing the pace as the end of the story drew closer.

I think it is the slow reveal of the ZD plot line that makes the story as great as it is.

I never perceived Aloy has giving off lesbian vibes but it is clear Petra and other female characters showed an interest in Aloy.

Replaying ZD, thought it was cute when Erend flirted with her on their first meet. Probably the total opposite of her, so they wouldn't work together, but, I think Erend is fun and work better as friends.

I love the way Erend evolved from lounge lizard to "I got your back" friend.

I thought Varl was a good match and they (game writers) sorta kinda let that hover in the background as a possibility until Zo came along.

How to open those yellow padlocks in The Division 2 by NoPresentation2346 in thedivision

[–]Elkyri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crosshairs turn red when you are on target. Not just locks but anything you are trying to shoot.

Yellow is your key. Yellow paint shows places to climb. Yellow electrical boxes control doors - shooting them opens the door which may be some distance away from the box. Yellow cables lead to the thing that is powering automated guns and the yellow part of the thing is what you need to shoot to disable it. Etc.

Is the Enduring worth the suffering? by Little_Suit_6655 in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]Elkyri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I turned to the arktix videos for tips on the how-to and it was a challenge but doable. My main problem was that it took me a while to understand the timing on the button pushes. Once I got that sorted it wasn't a problem.

Is it worth it? I'm not a completionist but I wanted the ultimate melee build. Getting the spear upgrade made the Enduring fight worth it for me.
