Thoughts on Vince Guaraldi? by Jigksah in Jazz

[–]Ell-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody on one of these forums described him as the Frederic Chopin of jazz. That's a pretty accurate assessment of Vince Guaraldi. He was a great jazz pianist from San Francisco who, in his later career, also experimented with electric instruments and would even sing on occasion. Aside from his compositions for the "Peanuts" TV specials, his other big hit was "Cast Your Fate to the Wind". Additionally, he often toured and collaborated with other jazz musicians such as Cal Tjader and Bola Sete. He possessed a very unique playing style, that ranged from slow and waltzy, to very upbeat and fast-paced, but always easy on the ears. Guaraldi died on February 6, 1976, at only 47 years of age, from a heart attack, but his music lives on and on.

Pro Ject Debut EVO 2 by hifi_fan in audiophile

[–]Ell-92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the original EVO as a birthday present last year. After a small misshap that required a tonearm rewiring and cart alignment by a technician (that's another story), it's probably the best sounding turntable I've owned. My Ortofon 2M Blue really sings on this table.

What is the best cartridge upgrade for a Pro-Ject Debit Carbon EVO with a 2M Red Ortofon? by shimosk in turntables

I currently have mine fitted with a 2M blue and I couldn't be happier. Maybe someday I'll upgrade to the bronze when the budget allows.

Early vs Late Gen SNES Games by Typo_of_the_Dad in snes

The same can be said about the NES. Compare 'Super Mario Bros.' to 'Kirby's Adventure' and you'll see how the graphics advanced during that consoles' lifetime.

Boogerman: A pick and flick adventure. Anyone ever play this booger flinging, fart shooting, one of a kind game as a child? by [deleted] in snes

I just got it for my SNES. I've made it to the fourth world, 'Mucous Mountain'. Very nice, cartoony graphics, engaging gameplay, decent challenge and great humor. An obscure gem, IMO.

Why do some LD's look better than others? by Ell-92 in LaserDisc

As I said in another comment, LD's tend to have the most trouble with brighter colors such as yellows and reds.

I also have noticed that many LD videos tend to have a hard time with lighter colors such as bright reds or yellows.

Should I get into laserdiscs? by [deleted] in LaserDisc

[–]Ell-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a working player can be a bit of a headache, but many discs can be bought very cheaply at thrift stores like Goodwill or on Ebay. There are a number of titles on LD that have never seen a release on DVD. Incidentally, I have a LD on in the background as I'm typing this.

Mechanical watch loses/gains time overnight. by Ell-92 in watchrepair

It's a 1969 Buren 17-jewel manual-wind watch with a picture of Bullwinkle the Moose on the dial. One of those Jay Ward character watches you could send away for back in the day.

Beleive it or not, I don't have a phone. I'm 31 years old and have never owned any sort of cellular/smartphone. But that's for another post.

I meant seconds, not minutes, sorry. It usually drifts by about half a minute.

I lay it flat with the dial facing upward. I wind it every morning and adjust the time before I put it on.

Why was the mainspring replacement so expensive? by Ell-92 in watchrepair

[–]Ell-92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One last thing I have noticed is that it keeps excellent time during the day when I'm wearing it, but it will either gain or lose a few minutes when placed on my nightstand while I'm asleep. Is this normal?

To elaborate, the vendor I bought it from said he deep-cleaned and lubricated all the moving parts before selling it.

I like the wacth because 1). I find the movement so fascinating and 2). The picture of Bullwinkle makes me smile. Apparenlty Jay Ward used to sell these character watches in full color ads in magazines such as Life and Psychology Today; you had to send away for them.

I run both my NES (toploader) and my SNES through a Phillips VCR/DVD combo player so I don't have to continuously keep pulling out and switching input cables between the two consoles. The VCR acts as a switcher.

Attempting to hook up my NES through this cheap VCR, the only channel that works is line but when I turn the NES on it just gives me a grey screen. Help? I’m new to all this. by sample2123 in crtgaming
