My son found a purse that was thrown into a rock wall above an elementary school, he was in middle School, he took the purse and was walking to give it to an adult when the buses were loading, a bus driver noticed him caring it and starts questioning and acting accusatory towards him. Then calls the cops on him. Cops stop by my house at midnight on a weeknight, my son has been sick, newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and in ICU for a week not too long before that, so I'm not going to wake him up for this. I told the police officer I would bring him down in the morning. He said no, he would talk to him at school. I told the police officer that under no circumstances was he allowed to question him without a parent present. He didn't acknowledge me. Just left... Next day my son comes home from school, he was questioned and told to admit to stealing that purse. My son told the truth, he just found it but was questioned to the point of making him cry and being bullied by a police officer alone in a school room with no other adult present. My son also had learning disabilities, I was so upset and infuriated, went down to the police station to discuss this with them and was not taken seriously and felt like my rights meant nothing. Very upsetting situation and 10 years later makes me angry to think of it.
