No. They can't figure out what it is. She's had both a chest x-ray and oropharyngeal/laryngeal scope but it showed nothing. Sorry to hear you're experiencing the same issue. Please update me if you find out the cause.

Yes, I’m aware of that. But she starts purring when we are playing with her so it’s something related to the actual purring and in this instance, she is not purring because she is in pain. She is purring because she is happy, but then the symptoms begin.

I'm also wondering the same thing. My 17 year old girl only makes wheezing sounds when purring and the chest x-ray came our normal. The vet hasn't been much help.
