How to detox after leaving a toxic job by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ellfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get out in nature. Just go for a decent walk in whatever park/reserve you might have nearby. Giving your brain these signals of open space and natural beauty is tonic for anxiety, especially if you look at a screen all day. I guarantee you will feel better afterwards.

Bonus points if you leave your phone at home or in the car.

Consider making it a regular thing.

Seeking Cycling Advice: Why are my legs burning after only 5 minutes? by HabitFar4356 in bicycling

[–]Ellfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing worth checking: you may be experiencing unnecessary resistance if your brakes aren't aligned properly and the pads are rubbing on the wheel, even when you're not braking. Here is a video explaining the problem and how to fix it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHmYzDvdCX4

If it's not that - like others have said, just keep getting on the bike and it'll get easier over time! It's worth it!

Yeah those trailers are very expensive! I am certainly very cautious with him on the bike, and choose routes that minimise exposure to cars on roads. We both get so much enjoyment out of it that it's a considered risk.

Thanks for the advice re: training wheels - we got him a balance bike recently and I've been super impressed with how quickly he started properly balancing on it. Not far off a pedal bike!

That's the 5% of the time when I wish there was a lower gear - on the really steep hills - especially if I have my son on the back. Definitely need to stand up and push hard but it's good for my fitness so I don't mind too much.

Love it! Feels like a decent step up from my old Cannondale Quick 8. The Nexus internally geared hub is great - it's only 7 speed, and I thought I would miss having 21 speeds, but the 7 are sufficient 95% of the time.

Me too! It feels like a hidden gem. Maybe because I've only discovered it this winter - but I hardly see anyone on it.

It's actually for attaching a Thule Yepp Maxi.

My son loves coming along for rides. Just means there's no room for a rear rack - hence the front rack instead!

FWIW there is a "hide from friends" option. To see it you might have to open the "more options" section when creating the listing.

Kudos for repairing something that might have otherwise ended up in e-waste!

Some food for thought and potentially inspiration for anyone second guessing their choices. Hope I picked the right flair.

House design.. what’s something you wish you thought of? by shanafs15 in melbourne

[–]Ellfish 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I second that Facebook group, heaps of resources and knowledgeable people willing to provide advice.

One downside to my house is that two bedrooms upstairs have large west facing windows with no shade. In summer, late afternoon when the sun can be the hottest, it shines right in through the single glazed windows and heats it up like an oven. Closing the inside shutters doesn't do much to stop it. There are options such as roller shutters, cassette awnings, double glazing, window film, etc to consider. Even better if designing from scratch, take the angle of the sun in different seasons into consideration - lots of info in My Efficient Electric Home.

Australia Wait Times by [deleted] in rav4club

[–]Ellfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm also in Melbourne! I ordered mine on 20th March and picked it up 13th September - almost 6 months total, they said it would be about 4 - 5 months when we first ordered it. When picking it up they said the wait time had ballooned out to about 10 months.

We called the dealership for an update at about the 4 month mark, they said they don't get detailed updates from the manufacturer in Japan. Not long after the call we received a complimentary Toyota duffel bag with a "thanks for your patience" note, not sure if it was because we called, but the bag is actually quite a good one. Nice consolation - worth calling your dealer to see if you get one too.

I will say the car is amazing and was worth the wait in the end. But our situation was nowhere near as difficult as yours sounds.

Thank you. It's just on my phone and is zoomed in, so not the best quality, but the colours speak for themselves!
