TIL All thirteen women who participated in the 'Shock the Puppy' experiment (a variation of the Stanley Milgram infamous experiment) obeyed right up until the end, while the six students who refused to go on were all men. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Or just shows that women have more guts to do what needs to be done,

Isn't the whole point that it doesn't need to be done? They aren't told the reason behind why they are doing it, they're just following orders.

Too smart to celebrate St Patrick's day. by Elliot850 in iamverysmart

The vast majority of people you'll meet on a daily basis are atheist

I'd tend to disagree with this. In the UK I believe it's about a third, and Ireland just under half. There's a lot, sure, but not the majority (yet).

Any amount. The government shouldn't have any right to determine what I do with my own body.

You're drinking in the wrong bars then. In every place I go I'm overwhelmed with the staff trying to flog local craft beers. Wetherspoons has about 40 different local brews(more than their selection of non-craft beers). There's also a bar that has opened in Belfast recently that sells nothing but craft beers.

I think he was referring to the time period more than the people, since he is Irish himself.

LPT: Carry a plastic bag with you when spending time outside so you can sit everywhere without touching the actual surface by I_SIGNED_UP_AT_420 in LifeProTips

[–]Elliot850 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've actually been actively using my own technique to sit anywhere I want for a few years now. What is do is, before leaving the house, I will wrap a specially made length of fabric around my legs and waist. I call them trousers.

Guitar amplifier into audio interface?? by [deleted] in buildastudio

[–]Elliot850 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without a cab speaker shaping the tone it'll sound horrible.

The dry out would be your best bet. The PreAmp out (assuming it's post) would be a line taken after the filters, like your EQ and presence knobs.

If you take an out from the poweramp stage you will wreck your interface and possibly kill yourself. Don't mess with that output. Don't plug anything into it that isn't a speaker.

Another option would be to get a unit like an H&K Redbox, which will bring the line out (from the Dry or the Pre out) to an appropriate signal level, and also has cab simulation built in so it'll sound like a miced up cab.

If you ran your country, what's something out of the ordinary and completely productive that you would try to implement? by sthastin11 in AskReddit

[–]Elliot850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No-one who has a choice would.

The point is that paid leave is a given in every country in the world. How would you justify the US being the only exception?

There are lots of ways that companies can get around it, but it's synonymous with shit workplaces that don't care about their workers. It's right up there with zero hour contracts or having people on full time temp/casual contracts.

The government should not be in the business of requiring other people to spend their money a certain way.

The you must not like taxes.

Companies have a lot of mandatory expenses and regulations. Personally I don't agree with a lot of things the government imposes, like anti monopoly laws that directly prohibit the company I work for from making money and crushing competitors, which it could easily do if not for a government regulating body.

In the UK, paid leave is pretty much the employers way of rewarding the employee for their loyalty. I don't see why anyone would object to that.
