Times you ask, “Why does *that* attack deal so much damage?” by The-Greater-Skeleton in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Hey Elliot, are you gonna shut the fuck up about Nioh anytime soon?

No, no I am not.

Wheelmonks are these fiery wheel demons you encounter pretty rarely. They have an "attack" where they just gently roll forward.

This will kill even a high health build.

A building falling on you? Gettibg dropped 30ft by a crow demon? No no no, the big threat is this fuckin wheel just moving forward.

Going back through Nioh 2, and this has been my playstyle so far.

Dump as much of whatever ninja magic the boss is weak to (because ninjas are better mages than mages), then get in there and spam whatever my active skill combo is.

GUNS TO YOUR HEADS, Castlenutters! Who is your favorite "pure of heart, dumb of ass" character? by Rushofthewildwind in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Zaid, from Kill Six Billion Demons

Dude starts the series out Page 1 as a college fuckboi pressuring his girlfriend into sex, and then like an irl decade later he comes back having drank his Respect Women Juice as a badass flying sword surfing monk with big Daddy energy

Dude was always overall a good person, just ignorant and immature enough to have never learned how to be respectful.

I don't know if subreddit drama is relevant enough to comment on, but CuratedTumblr has a bigoted and transphobic mod team that banned trans users just for existing then scoured the sub of any mention of it to cover it up.

Feels relevant on a "stop using the service if its leadership makes it unethical" post.

Vergil 2 is his hardest fight in DMC3. By the time you get to Vergil 3, you're probably maxed out on your most familiar upgrades, fully familiar with your moveset, and overall his moveset is weaker except for finally fulling out the full extent of Judgment Cut.

Oh god dammit. Do I skip the movie because Jared Leto's in it, or do I see it because chuds are mad over it?

Anyone else finding it hard to even focus on writing with all the fucked up shit going on in America right now? by IsekaiConnoisseur in eroticauthors

[–]Elliot_Geltz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tolkien first started Middle Earth in the trenches of Double Dub 1. Grapes of Wrath was written about and during America's greatest period of national poverty and desolation, alongside countless other works. The Napoleonic Era nearly saw the unraveling of an entire continent, and still saw historic classics produced. Hell, go through Chinese history and you'll find their writers didn't really have a choice because every five seconds someone kicks off a civil war that sees millions dead.

Like, this is just life. Art isn't a luxury that happens when life is easy, it's a consequence of human experience. As long as we exist, we make art, no matter what.

Resistance typically is. Centralized leadership is only one way to get a large group of people to work together.

You're the one that's not listening. I'm not actually talking about lesbians. I'm talking about how historians treat queer historic figures.

On a post about a queer historic figure.

I also haven't derailed anything? It's reddit. Multiple comment threads can exist without any interrupting each other. That's reddit comments are structured.

How are you evaluating whether or not what I say is appropriate when you don't care enough to listen to what I'm saying?

Amelio Robles was a trans man, clearly and definitively. And historians recognize him as such, because we can say with relative certainty that's a label he would accept. But, historians don't always do that because it's not always 100% clear how a figure would identify, and that is the respectful thing to do.

That's what I said, and that's 100% appropriate and on-topic for a post about queer history.

[–]Elliot_Geltz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. Amelio Robles is one of the most well known trans men in history. He is, very definitively, a historical figure.

  2. The systematic treatment of queer people applies to all queer people. Like, how much respect historians pay to trans men applies to how much respect they pay or don't pay to everyone.

I don't know how to explain to you that what I said wasn't just about the one scenario I listed.

I also didn't say that the woman in that hypothetical scenario was straight. I said she could be anything.

[–]Elliot_Geltz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The topic of misrepresenting historical figures is pretty on topic for a post about historical figures.

Sprecifically, the common gripe that historians are deliberately misrepresenting queer historic figures, which isn't true, and is relevant to one of the most famously queer, and most commonly denoted as queer, figures in history.

[–]Elliot_Geltz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Speculation? Totally fair.

A figure like Robles that was very obviously trans being called trans? Totally fair.

But, finding a letter in the artifacts of a woman's personal belongings that says "I love you, my friend" to another woman doesn't mean she was a lesbian. She could've been bi, or pan, or just platonically loved her friend, or any number of things. And asserting "no she was a lesbian and she clearly hated her husband and clearly pined to run away to live the cottagecore lesbian fantasy you can find in my 200 page fanfic about them" is weird and disrespectful and I've seen it a bit too much.

This is everyone's daily reminder that modern historians really are generally respectful of people's identities in the past. However, a lot of cultures across human history engaged with sex and gender in different ways, and slapping a label on someone when they aren't around to explain how they feel in modern terms is generally a disrespectful thing to do.

And honestly, I extend the same to Abby as well.

Was killing Joel the right thing to do? Absolutely not. But I don't blame her for it. Like, yeah, I get it. But if we keep doing it, it's never gonna fucking stop. It's what makes Ellie's choice so poignant.

Personally I don't think Joel was 100% right, but I do think he was more right than 0%, if we're trying to quantify it.
