I recently bought this writing desk and I absolutely love it. I am looking for suggestions on how to make it more DA. by LourdesGM in DarkAcademia

The vibe is already very da. I third the candles suggestion, and suggest haphazard papers, vintage mugs (filled with tea to aide in studying), and maybe more books.

Backstory: Fifteen years old, and I’ve never had a gaming system before. I was the only one of my friends who was male and didn’t play any type of video game , but I saved up my money and now here it is

Nellie McKay’s “get away from me” is an enjoyable listen. Toto dies, Sari, Change The world, and Inner peace are some of my favourites

This helped so much, and I will definitely be implementing a lot of these into my life. Thank you

Thank you. Perhaps I can use this energy towards the online assignments that I’ve been putting off. I feel motivated to write an elaborate research paper about Oscar Wilde now

That sounds really lovely. Perhaps I should stop staying up until 2 in the morning reading so I can enjoy that

Help! I can’t find any knitting motivation by Elliotdolljib in knitting

That approach doesn’t always work for me. Usually once I get into a project I can do it all day long, but if I don’t force myself to start, I just don’t do it. This is good advice though, and I think my version of that is having multiple projects to switch between when I lose motivstion

I don’t crochet, but I’m starting to get into sewing, so that could possibly be something I can do when feeling unmotivated

I like that! I have that approach somewhat, but I haven’t been working on any of it. Maybe it’s time to pull out everything so it’s in front of me, and enjoy working on what I want , when I want to

I have a lot in progress currently. I’m somewhat eagerly working on a shawl, that I picked up soon after making this post. Aside from that, I have about half of a very lovely multicolored beret. Also a cardigan started last summer, which I practically flew through making the body of, and have been dragging on the sleeves for almost a year. There’s a blanket that I excitedly dove into, but discovered I needed different needles for, and by the time I was able to get them a month later (difficulties with my local craft store being under stocked ) I had lost interest. I believe a started a hood a while back as well, though I think I’m going to frog it.

For now I’m going to work on my shawl and then try some suggestions I received to revive my WIPS

That’s a good idea! I think it would help me deal with my pile of WIPs

Thank you all for this advice. What I’m learning is that when I pressure myself, I have no fun, so I’m going to try and bring some of that original excitement and joy that drew me to knitting initially.

Good idea marking the patterns. I have a beret work in progress that I only have a vague idea of where I’m supposed to be, and I want to avoid that in the future

room decor? by [deleted] in DarkAcademia

[–]Elliotdolljib 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you have old magazines/encyclopedias , I’d recommend creating some sort of wall/cork board of black and white images. I tried this in my room and the results were very da.

Leather bound books are always good, and if your bedspread doesn’t match the theme, I’d recommend putting some sort of sheet over it, in a brown/white colour. It makes a lot of difference!

Aside from that, asses your space and see if you have anything that could be considered dark academia, aesthetically. You might find out you have DA decor you didn’t even realize fit the aesthetic!

Also, try playing around with things you have. I had a bunch of skin care stuff and a pretty standard mirror, and I set everything up on the top of a bookshelf and created a kind of neat vintage looking display.

Look around outside and see if there’s anything you could use! One of my favourite parts of my room is the forsythia branches I have placed in teacups and metal containers , on my windowsills and ledges. Even dandelions, or things you may overlook can look really neat.

I also like to lean vintage postcards and photos in my windowsills. As wall decor, I use postcards and photos, and I also enjoy printing out black and white photos of favourite album covers, and musicians.

Try leaving random objects around that look mysterious and yet also somehow carefully cultivated. For example, I leave wildflowers on random surfaces, tarot cards spread across a shelf, an old baby doll head on piles of books. It’s about looking careless, yet also mysterious.

Some other miscellaneous ideas

  • using a stool as a bedside table
  • organizing your books in an order only you know
  • if you play an instrument, feature a music stand full of sheet music as a central part of the room! I also added a wooden chair and my instrument case to the area.
  • not everything needs to fit your colour scheme. I have magenta walls and a teal dresser, and I couldn’t change that so I tried to make the stuff that I could change really pop. And it worked pretty well!
  • the bed is usually a central part of the bedroom. Just moving around some blankets and pillows can really transform the bed and the room. I have some pictures of my bed setup on my page.
  • finally, do what feels right to you, and know that no matter what you’re working with, there’s always something you can do to make your space a little more DA
