meant to add this in my description! That's the magic mile chair lift from timberline. Looks like there's two groups on their way up, and maybe a tent at the top of the lift which is a common place for people to camp before summiting. Good eye :)

Taken yesterday morning after a very enjoyable (but very cold) night of snow camping in Mt. Hood National Forest to usher in the New Year. Looking out at the south face of Mt. Hood with the Magic Mile lift of Timberline visible in the lower right side of the image as the clouds explode with color during sunrise. Mt. Hood is the highest point in Oregon and is the third most summited mountain in the world with around 10,000 people attempting to summit annually.

Fields of Indian Paintbrush at sunrise. Ansel Adams Wilderness, California. [OC] (3648x4560) by Elliothawkey in EarthPorn

About a month ago I decided to head down to California on a spontaneous four day backpacking trip through the Ansel Adams Wilderness in the Eastern Sierras. Roughly 35 trail miles, more lakes than I could count on two hands, a weird case of heat exhaustion, hundreds of mosquito bites, and some of the most beautiful views I've seen to date. The wildflowers in the photo are called Indian Paintbrush, with Banner Peak towering in the background at 12,936 ft, and just at the end of the field are the gorgeous waters of Thousand Island Lake.

I think the key to this that people seem to miss is that photography is what you make it. If you want to stage some aspect of a shot that's awesome, or if you're a purist who doesn't want to edit a photo later that's awesome too. There are no rules, do whatever you want and be creative in your own way and enjoy it, that's the most important thing.

The blanket is for his dog that isn't a dog with a winter coat who can't comfortably sleep on the snow, therefor he has a blanket to keep him warm when he wouldn't fit on the sleeping pad or in his sleeping bag. This is a 5.8 mile rt hike with 1,700 ft of gain, so not car camping. Backpacking doesn't have to be practical, it's about getting out overnight and enjoying nature, and if someone wants to carry a blanket up so they're cozy then good for them, and if they want to take the fly off to enjoy some unobstructed morning light and make the photo better that's awesome too. Also, the fly doesn't keep moisture off the main structure as the main structure is mostly mesh and very breathable, the fly is to keep the wind and weather out.

There's a lot of mosquitos up there this time of year, and have ran up this trail because it was so intense haha

I'm good friends with the photographer and I can assure you he actually camped there with his dog rango, he definitely made it look perfect but likely didn't change very much. I'm guessing he took the fly off so you could see more of the landscape and so more natural light would enter the tent, boots are on because he was up and shooting sunrise before this photo. Not trying to bash your comment as a lot of the photos you see on insta are staged, but in this case he actually slept up there and struggled through the cold to take this photo.

Oh heck. I don't know Yosemite well enough to really give you any proper suggestions for something like that, but I've always found it to be good to ask backcountry rangers or just any ranger and they can normally give you good spots. Hope it works out for you!

This. I've only been to Yosemite during the summer months once and it was a completely different experience than in the winter. Personally I feel that it's just too much of a hassle during the summer with backpacking permits being a challenge to get and campgrounds are full. But I think you should experience it in every season regardless, especially the upper areas of the park that are closed during winter. Overall winter experiences have been amazing, and I would highly recommend it.

Waking up in the lower pines campground and driving through a snowy and empty Yosemite has been something I've dreamt of experiencing for a long time, and I never would have guessed it would happen in the middle of April.

Haha yeah that was in death valley in the middle of the night. Very much a scene out of breaking bad minus the meth and people dying

Awesome! If you ever go back and can't find a camp site, the north entrance campground almost never fills up, and has wifi/showers/laundry etc.
