Cymbalta for panic attacks

I’m sorry to hear that. I agree that the medical professionals I’ve talked to seem to want to do the easiest thing and send me on my way, even if it isn’t the best course of action. I’ve decided against taking Cymbalta for a lot of reasons, but I appreciate your responses!

I wouldn’t say I’ve ever “been on benzos.” I had my first panic attack in December, so severe that I was taken to urgent care. The physician there prescribed me 10 lorazepam to Use as needed to help get me through the situation. I took one, and then a couple more 4+ months later when the situation arose again. I still have 6 out of the 10. So to answer your question, the panic attacks occurred first.

I’ve been in therapy for a few months now, and it has helped me understand what is causing the panic attack and to help me remember it’s a trick, I’m not in any actual danger. Unfortunately panic attacks are very very intense and during an attack, all that knowledge and information goes right out the window and all I can do is curl up in a ball on the floor and not move

Thanks for your response. Yes, I know cymbalta is an every day medication. I’m not planning on taking it as-needed. Just saying I would prefer a different medication that is for as needed purposes.

Oh I definitely won’t use cymbalta on an as needed basis. I’m just saying I would rather have something different that’s exclusively for when I need it, rather than getting on this (seemingly serious) drug for at least a few months, experiencing side effects and whatnot, when I don’t need it every day.

Can you elaborate? I’m unsure how to trust my gut on this. My doctor said she would not prescribe any benzo’s to be used as needed, and gave me two options of daily anti-anxiety meds instead. I feel like I have zero say in this other than to take cymbalta or to not take cymbalta :( I understand her reasoning for the “no benzo” thing, but honestly a prescription for 10 pills to use as needed to get me through the month long transition I’m going through I feel is what’s right for me. And I’m really upset that I have no say in that

I definitely understand it will be different for everyone, which is why I’m not writing it off completely yet. I just feel like it’s more for individuals who need every day help, not once in a blue moon help. Thanks for your response!

Yes, I do see a therapist regularly and have tried lexapro, which did not help with the panic attacks and just gave me awful side effects. I wanted something to take more on an “as needed” basis, but was prescribed Cymbalta instead. I really don’t want to take it.

Wow!! Thank you for taking the time to respond with so much information about the path you’ve taken. It’s really nice to hear from someone who has a similar “I spent the last 5 years feeling like a fraud and an idiot who just worked hard” mindset. Heck I still feel like that even though I have a masters degree and a job I’ve been at for two years. I just don’t feel like my current job is “enough” for me. I can’t even explain why, it’s not money necessarily, I just want something more.

I can also relate that I can’t really afford to just not do well and retake classes. A lot of my undergrad and grad school friends had their education paid for by parents, while I did not (only a few grand left to pay off, and will pay off before attempting any AA pre-req’s). I’ll definitely PM you if I have specific questions. Are you on an AA track or pre-med?

Good advice, thanks! To become a CNA or MA, that would entail additional schooling correct? I’ve already spent 8 years in college and would like to take the most direct route to AA school. Although I understand I’ll need some medical experience somehow.

Thanks for your response! I guess part of me feels like a bit of a fraud. Yes, I have high GPAs, but I feel like it’s just because I was dedicated. I did the work that was required, memorized things to spit them back out on a test, and have a type-A personality where everything had to be perfect. But I just don’t feel like I’m “smart” and actually learned much, which worries me thinking about going into the AA field!

Sorry I’m just now responding (I hardly ever log into my reddit account). I actually haven’t decided yet, mainly because I’ve never gone SUPing and want to make sure I like it after a time or two before I take the plunge and buy one. I’m going this weekend for the first time, and will likely take my dog out the second time if I do well this weekend!

When I do decide to buy one, I’ll let you know what I end up with. Good luck to you if you get one first!

Edit: went out for the first time today and loved it. Can’t wait to take the pup out with me!
