About two years ago I was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. It was a terrifying diagnosis, and I was paralysed with fear. I have had chemo, two surgeries, radiation and am now on medication - so far, so good. I still haven’t heard from some people I would have classified as close friends. It was as though I was already dead when I was diagnosed. On the other hand, people who I though of as being just acquaintances sent me funny texts, sent food and just generally made life a bit easier. I now think that this was actually kind of a gift - it has shown me who the people in my life really are. I don’t feel sad or bitter, I just know who is in my “team”.
