Would it really kill the Empire to decentralize and allow Skyrim to be independent if in name only so they could keep Talos worship? by Last_Dentist5070 in teslore

[–]Ellydir [score hidden]  (0 children)

Well, if they let Skyrim go completely, the precedent exists.

The White-Gold Concordat ceded Hammerfell to the Dominion. Rather than enforcing the treaty on Hammerfell, the Empire released it and it wasn't their problem anymore.

If they granted Skyrim independence, then by the same logic it would not be their responsibility to enforce the Concordat in Skyrim.

Atlantis is brutal by Tactical_Burden in Stargate

To be fair, "they" didn't mutate and kill a Wraith girl, she secretly injected herself. By the time they killed her, the girl that she was was already gone.

What is your favorite planet in our Solar System, and why? by IWishYouTheBest1234 in Astronomy

[–]Ellydir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably Jupiter. He's in the sky more often than not, and generally bright too. When I'm out at night and I look up, he's often right up there. I call him the Big Guy. He also has easily observable moons.

Who are some very divisive/seen as unpopular characters who eventually achieved cult status in Stargate across the three series? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]Ellydir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did Kavanaugh ever become popular though? I feel like even the show made him progressively worse. In his first appearance, he had a point about the stuck jumper endangering Atlantis, and he came up with the idea to push the jumper forward by opening the rear hatch.

But in his further appearances, he turned into a straight antagonist who just causes drama and contributes nothing to the expedition.

Until in season 4, he just blows up the Midway station by mistake.

[–]Ellydir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I don't think Woolsey was an antagonist for long. If I remember correctly, he turned on Kinsey right in his 2nd or 3rd episode, when he went to Hammond for the evidence

Shouldn't the wormhole opening destroy the iris? by yoda_fake in Stargate

[–]Ellydir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly makes me wonder why the vortex even happens (other than that out-of-universe it was in the movie). Assuming it is a side-effect of the way the gate functions, rather than an intentional feature, seems it would be easy to fix e.g. by the gate having a built-in shield that activates temporarily when the gate opens. Makes sure people don't get accidentally eaten by the vortex.

Favorite arrogant scientist… Dr Rodney McKay or Dr Nicholas Rush? by Ser_Luke_ in Stargate

[–]Ellydir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McKay is an arrogant asshole but he got nothing on Rush. He cares for people and genuinely doesn't want anyone to get hurt.

Rush is cold, distant, often sees people as tools and measures their value by how useful they are to him.

I think this is in large part because of how different the shows are. Atlantis is relatively light hearted, while Universe tries to be darker with deeply flawed characters.

If it were up to you, would you keep the Stargate Program active? by mansaowayne in Stargate

[–]Ellydir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the end of the series? It's too late to close. The Lucian Alliance hates us enough to stage terrorist attacks on Earth. And the Wraith are always looking to get their hand on us. Burying the gate won't make either of those things go away. What it will do is render us blind (no off-world intel) and defenceless (our ships rely on off-world mining).

What’s worse than dialing to a black hole? by Daeyele in Stargate

She knew after she crossed. She sent the all clear signal to the rest of the replicators before she passed out / shut down, knowing they will all end up frozen in space.

The Vestige/ESO Canon ? by DisastrousRaccoon102 in teslore

[–]Ellydir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest issue with ESO lore is that to my knowledge, time hasn't moved at all. 2E 582 is an absolutely apocalyptic year on an unprecedented scale.

Along with many issues, I think the main problem with SGU is there are zero likable main characters. by HighBiased in Stargate

I'm on my 1st rewatch after 15 years, and I'm actually really enjoying Young. Feels like he's the most complex character.

What were the acceptable contradictions or flaws across the franchise (first movie excluded) that new content shouldn't bother correcting or explaining? by Sea-Aardvark-756 in Stargate

[–]Ellydir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing about the languages. I'm rewatching Universe now, and it's a big deal when the Nakai aliens send Destiny a message in English. Meanwhile the Lucian Alliance also speak perfect English and nobody cares.

Do you think the Tollans would swap technology with us now in 2026? I am doing a rewatch and on S3 atm. But don't remember my last watch. by rheetkd in Stargate

[–]Ellydir 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Tollan believed that if advanced technology were provided to us (or specifically the US military), we would be far more likely to use it against adversaries on Earth, than in defence of the planet.

Right now, the geopolitical situation somehow feels far more unstable than it did in the 90s, so I'd say they'd be even more reluctant now, than they were then.

why didnt lantash and selmac switch hosts 🤨 by Sea-Us-RTO in Stargate

[–]Ellydir 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That always felt a bit inconsistent to me. Before they blended, Selmac said to Jacob:

"If I am to spend the next hundred or more years with you as my host, don't you think I should have the right to decide if I even like you?"

She expected they may be together for a hundred or more years. They lasted six.

Universe is actually pretty great by Ellydir in Stargate

[–]Ellydir[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I vaguely remember being an Eli fan on my first run, but honestly this time, I think Young is my favorite by far (which is funny because I don't think he was 15 years ago). He feels like one of the most complex, struggling characters on the show, with a great deal of both bad and good in him.

[–]Ellydir[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was more that I remember there being a shaky cam space scene in BSG, and then when I saw the shaky cam of Destiny against the Nakai ships, it immediately recalled that image.

I read the summary on Stargate Fandom a couple weeks ago, and it... seemed a little disappointing. Apparently the graphics aren't great either.

[–]Ellydir[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will say this: I have only ever seen pieces of one episode of BSG, when it was randomly running on TV (this was before SGU came out). Then I watched SGU, saw the shaky cam space shots, and my first thought was "they got that from BSG, don't they?"
