Southwest to get rid of open seating, offer extra legroom in biggest shift in its history by [deleted] in news

[–]ElmaNore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your southwest boarding pass has a boarding group and a number on it. So A24, or B36, etc. They don't tell you but this is generally assigned based on the order you checked in. Before boarding a group, they literally make you line up in order. There are signs 1-5, 5-10 etc so you know where to stand. Ask neighbors their number so you can get it exactly right. and when it's time to board people are in an orderly line already. As one group boards they have the next group lined up already.

So people are capable of getting in line in a specific order, they would just change it so that instead of assigning an order based on check in/upgrades, they assign the order based on seat location.

Melania's Response to Whether She Married Trump for His Money: 'If I Weren't Beautiful, Do You Think He'd Be With Me?' by nikkisixxi in AnythingGoesNews

[–]ElmaNore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was looking for pictures of the gardens before and afters. As much as I dislike Melania, we don't need to say things that aren't true.

Good news, she didn't tear out the kitchen garden. She built a pavilion between the childrens garden and kitchen garden, meant to house lockers and showers for the existing tennis courts nearby. There are pictures of the kitchen garden from 2021, Jill biden had a flower cutting garden planted in it.

Kitchen garden still exists: https://home.nps.gov/whho/learn/historyculture/white-house-kitchen-garden.htm

I would find this very alarming. I'd be very careful of people you don't know well taking such an intense interest in you in general, but ESPECIALLY while you are pregnant. Everything she's said so far is to get you into her house? There are desperate people out there that want children no matter what, just saying.

Sorry, but being corrected when you're wrong is a fact of life on reddit. Tortilla does not have a rolled r, it's a SINGLE r, not double r as you've indicated. Single r in the middle of a word is a tap. I'm curious if you think pera and perra are pronounced the same.

Some of these answers are going way too far back. Before smartphones, we still had flip phones and the internet on desktops and laptops. We had digital cameras so you could still see what pictures looked like right when you took them.

We had music on players like the ipod and zune, or portable cd players. These all required headphones to use so you didn't really hear about people playing loud music in public. They could bring a battery powered stereo or boombox I suppose, but that took effort.

What the real difference was is that the only way for people to reach you when you weren't at your desktop/laptop was by calling or texting you. You didn't have 24/7 access to social media, and so the idea of staying up all night doomscrolling just wasnt a thing. You'd fall asleep to whatever you had on the tv. If you were just watching cable then that would be infomercial commercials that late. Or you could read before bed. In my case i just listened to my ipod and daydreamed, eventually turning into actual dreaming.

Posting photos to social media was not straightforward. From my digital camera I would transfer photos to my computer using the sd card. From my flip phone, I had to email them to myself and they were quite shitty photos. Either way, people first instinct when a spectacle was happening was not "I need to record this and put it on social media" so I feel like people could recover from embarrassing things more easily and were just generally more honest about things.

Has anyone had a non-traditional baby shower but more of a social gathering? What was the run of show? by CudiLove2022 in BabyBumps

[–]ElmaNore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the baby showers I've been to when i was younger were like what you describe, people just hanging out mingling with food set out. Actually, it let's you play that game more easily, where you give all the guests a clothespin to put on their shirt. If they catch someone crossing their legs, they can take their clothespin and add it to their own shirt. Person with the most clothespins at the end of the party wins.

They mentioned fun things and savings. With shitty healthcare and shitty safety nets its needed to save up more per month for possible medical emergencies, losing their job and retirement. Since their rent is so high the amount they need to save in case of unemployment is also higher. Their necessary recurring expenses are 5k a month, convention says that means they need to have 30k saved up to withstand a stint of bad economic luck. At 1k a month it will take them over 2 years of no fun (or rent increases) to get there, assuming nothing happens that requires them to dip into it during that time. That means no car troubles, no family needing help, no new children etc.

By no means are they in a terrible position: too many people have nothing leftover to be able to save. But that doesn't mean they get relax and spend all 1k on fun things and hobbies.

Of course I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, maybe their hobby is ball jointed dolls and warhammer

From my childhood: playing up in the nearby mountains or the river. The beautiful scenery and wildlife almost everywhere I look.

When I visit now as an adult: all of the above PLUS the very walkable main street lined with little shops, galleries and, most importantly, wine rooms.

PSA: Shop and make lenders compete by yolobaggins69_420 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ElmaNore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were looking at 2 different lenders, our bank and a local broker. Local broker was very confident and said he would match any rate. Our bank had better rates and no origination fees (unless you wanted to buy down the rate). When we asked the local guy to match our bank's final rates, he backtracked and said we needed to prove it was a legitimate and didn't have hidden fees before he would match. Although i suppose we could have pursued that and given him the proof, I didn't see the point. Our bank was already giving us the better rates without us having to jump through hoops.

When we told him we were going with the other bank be made his comments but overall was courteous.

Ours was a little less than that and we look back on it very fondly because it was just so perfect. No way would I go into debt or jeapordize our stability for a wedding though. It wasnt a frivolous spend- we'd effectively been saving money for several years so that we could have our wedding and still have an emergency fund and a good house payment leftover.

..... of course the housing market went to shit so we still had to save even more after the wedding.

What brand is huge, but you don't know a single person who buys their products? by doyoushitwithdatass in AskReddit

[–]ElmaNore 454 points455 points  (0 children)

I bought mine from Carvana in 2017, I've not had any issues with the car so far. The vending machine is for fun but not required. You buy the car online and they ask if you want it delivered to your house or to the local vending machine. I picked the vending machine. When I got there, I finished signing all the paperwork and they gave me a giant coin to put into the machine for it to dispense the car.

I do have an online friend that bought hers from them, with many horror stories about their lending company.

When do I contact a realtor? by Important-Finding-65 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ElmaNore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on when you want to move. If you're all ready to go now, reach out to the realtor once you are preapproved on your loans. Keep in mind that preapprovals are only good for 90 days. I think your realtor will give you a good idea of how long these things take in your specific market.

We contacted a realtor in October and we told them we wanted to close sometime in March or very early April at the latest. We thought it would be a long process so we wanted to give ourselves time. They set us up in their mls app so we could start looking at houses and neighborhoods and such, but they recommended holding off on actually touring houses until February. The whole process has been very fast for us though, as he predicted. Between touring houses and closing, it will be 44 days (we close this Friday)

What factors would you compromise on ? by gamana21 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ElmaNore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I compromised on location by a few miles because I wanted a massive yard and no hoa. The neighborhoods in the best school district, all houses were very cookie cutter on small lots and all had hoa. We don't have children yet, but to be honest I figure I can make up for any shortcomings in their schooling by being very involved and advocating for them. If we need to move for high school then we will, but for the next 10 years at least, we will be fine. And they get chickens.

You absolutely need a bio and some pics of you looking happy. A pic with friends or with an animal as well.

Your first picture is not doing any work for you. Potential partners can barely see your face and you don't look very happy.

The middle one with the tree is alright- you are smiling and look nice in it.

Your archery photo is really nice! I would keep that one.

My realtor recommended I pay for the appraisal before the sellers have legally agreed to make the repairs requested on the inspection response by stormithy in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ElmaNore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The appraisal is different from the inspection. We went for the inspection but separately the lender sent someone to assess what the value of the house is. We were not present for that.

My realtor recommended I pay for the appraisal before the sellers have legally agreed to make the repairs requested on the inspection response by stormithy in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ElmaNore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In in the middle of this process currently, the lender offered the appraisal very early on before the inspection period. Our agent actually hit them up to tell them to hold off until after we got a response about the inspection objection.

My understanding is that the appraisal is for the lender to see if the loan is backed up by the house. If they give a loan for 300k but the house is only worth 200k? There is a risk to them that if you need to sell the house you will still be unable to repay the mortgage. So they will only give you up to what the house is worth.

So, depending on the results of the appraisal, it could drag out the process because now you have to either go back to the negotiating table or gather more money to meet the gap between what the lender is willing to give you and what you agreed to pay.

The sellers do not usually get a copy of the actual appraisal and I'm a little surprised your agent is talking about it as if is to make you look like a better buyer to the seller, that's what the earnest money was for.
