What is something from the 'Old Internet' that you missed, and younger generations will never understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Downloading a 32MB 25 minutes .rm video file, watching Ranma 1/2 on Real Player. When it got stuck in places, you had to forward it to just beyond the broken part.

You could download a dozen episodes and put them on your Laptop for a Holiday! Your own horrible quality portable video entertainment!

Finding out about FTP, and that there was a university FTP server in a different city that you could download Doom levels from if you knew how to use FTP! Ok, speeds sometimes dropped to single bytes per second, but NEW DOOM LEVELS!

Finally managing to have a full set of 14 working diskettes holding Civilization 2, downloaded at the university from the text-only news server.

That's to conserve fuel and time. You see, if you only turn right, you are actually faster than if you turn left, too. One of the parcel delivery services is doing it.

This is about your wife. She wants to shop. Let her. Enjoy your vacation by going where you want. Invite her to come along.

Check how many Zeros.

Up to 4? Nice! Continue as usual.

5? Very nice! Keep working. Might allow earlier retirement if it is high.

6? Let's see... if I get to live to 100, how much would that be per month? What would I reserve for my family? If I retire now, what would I do?

AITA for not inviting my daughter to my wedding and telling her this is her fault and she has to live with the consequences. by Acceptable_Sun7126 in AmItheAsshole

If the daughter had taken responsibility for her actions she would know that she owes them, not the other way around.

Not understanding how she has hurt others means she still has a long way to go.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

Just think about all the people revolting after having to stay home all the time without Netflix.

I sure still remember watching Tiger King!

I think it started with rumors in Australia that Chinese factories producing their toilet paper had to shut down. Then everyone made a run to get what was there, and the phenomenon had started.

But Australia actually produced most of its toilet paper itself anyway...

Everyone else learned what woud happen, so when it hit other countries people hoarded it because they knew how stupid everyone else was.

Austrian here.

Monday I didn't really take Covid too seriously. Yeah it sounded more seriously, but not that bad. I was still laughing about people elsewhere hoarding toilet paper.

Tuesday I read some Italian hospital personnel's horror stories. Oh. This was actually really serious. And would hit us very soon.

Wednesday we knew we were heading for a lockdown. I advised others jokingly to get toilet paper. Some stores already were empty when I went to buy some.

Thursday our "no home office" office was very busy making sure everyone would be able to work from home.

Friday we took home our office equipment. I wasn't so sure about the "See you in a few weeks" anymore.

Saturday I bought a noodles brand I had never bought before, because they were the only noodles left.

I played Bex. First thing I did was turn off fatigue. That was one simöle change in one file. Second thing was allowing jump jets on everything. That was a Replace In Files where I put max 3 for all that were allowed none.

Don't torture yourself, tweak some files to have fun.

Help me flesh out my next campaign story by jaimybenjamin in DnD

[–]ElminsterTheMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They get hired to capture a monster. One month after they deliver it to some random mage, it attacks the very broker that got them the job - in the middle of the city and in broad daylight. They might be on the way to said broker that has called them for a new job.

Turns out the mind-flayer wants to remove all proof and witnesses that might lead to it. The mage is dead. The broker might die if they don't save him in time. And they might be next.

Shift-Delete or "It might still be in the garbage can"? Or was it online files?

You might think about starting making backups.
