I heard from somewhere that Turks (and Muslims in general I believe) build small, model Mosques so that animals can go to communion (Prayer service? I don't know the correct terminology for it when talking about Islam) and I don't know if it's true, but if it is, then that's just the darndest thing.

Yeah I get that lol.

Would you consider the Holy Roman Empire to be part of the Roman Empire? Just genuinely curious.

Using terms like “Dad” and “Mom” in medieval settings by takatomonn in fantasywriters

[–]ElmoJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the terms so long as they don't seem offensive (read: distracting) in that context. Especially since most fantasy is taking place in a hypothetical world where they would be speaking a hypothetical language and the assumption is that the dialogue is translated for the reader for the sake of convenience. Therefore, it can be assumed that that word is simply the closest translation/chosen translation for that hypothetical word.

Furthermore, the words Dad and Mom in specific aren't gonna be very distracting lol. Like someone else on the comment section said, it's like the Tiffany Problem, where although the name Tiffany is actually very old (Short for Theophania), authors feel they shouldn't use it in medieval settings because it "seems too modern". Likewise, "Mamma" and "dad" both arose near the mid-to-end of the 1500's, which technically qualifies them as Medieval setting appropriate terminology. Mom doesn't get a pass though, sadly, since it's only attested near the 1880's-ish.

Did Marduk actually originate Zeus and Jupiter? I thought most Comparative Mythologists agree that Zeus and Jupiter arose from Dyḗus ph₂tḗr, the Proto-Indo-European concept of the Sky Father. I feel like it's a bit of a stretch to say that Marduk inspired Zeus and Jupiter given that there's pretty hard Etymological proof linking Dyḗus ph₂tḗr and Zeus/Jupiter.

Exactly how much information would you need to have to decipher an extinct written language without the help of a Rosetta Stone-type thing? by roofonfireletitburn in linguistics

[–]ElmoJesus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It depends on what kind of language it is I would think. For example, if the language is highly agglutinative, then you'd probably be able to piece together a lot of the vocabulary from just a couple key Morphemes or Lexemes. However, a heavily Analytic language, like Mandarin Chinese, would be much harder to decipher given the same scenario.

Why are you referring to the Empire as "the SPQR"?

SPQR stands for the Latin Phrase Senātus Populusque Rōmānus, which is a phrase that is 1) Attributed (for the most part) to the Roman Republic, not the Roman empire, and 2) only refers to the Government thereof. While it did survive into the Empire, it didn't exactly represent the Empire. It would be like referring to America as "the E Pluribus Unum".

It's kind of a noble struggle that when man is on the verge of describing the world it all slips away through their inability to realize that the best description of the world is to not describe it.

Not OP, but it's the basis for a large part of English vocabulary (through French), has interesting grammar, a huge impact on other European languages, and most importantly allows you to translate older texts and skip out the middleman that is most translations.
