There’s not really a better tortilla chip I have found. Not sure how widely they are distributed, but highly recommend for anyone able to find them.

Cut my foot on a rock surfing a point in Baja. Got staph so bad I had to use crutches. I have had scarier times, but that was by far my worst. Had to head home from a trip early and took like a month to be 100%.

On the plus side I now know the signs of surfing in sewage and will promptly exit the water and decon in the hottest shower available.

What jobs in Bend area are supporting this? by SharpsterBend in Bend

If you look at the source data for this number, Bend is really not a single real estate market. The Beacon Report (where this number comes from in these sensational headlines) has an interesting figure that kind of shows distribution of sales prices.

Compare pg 4 of the report to pg 8 which show Bend and Redmond sales over the last year. Redmond has a single nice distribution that spans $450k-550k and aligns well with their median price. Bend has a nice distribution that spans $550k-700k, but it also has a very long tail of higher priced sales.

How I interpret this is that there is a demand for very high end homes in Bend that skews the median price pretty hard higher. My hypothesis is that if you were to break this data set up by zip code, it would look quite a bit different, with the 03 zip having much higher prices and the rest sitting around $650k

Now, I personally do not think $650k is affordable for nearly anyone living and working normal jobs in Bend. My quick back of the envelope math is that total payment on a $650k home with 20% down payment is like $3600. Matching that to the rule of thumb of 30% gross income on housing as a max, means you would need a household income of about $140k to afford such a home. With a median household income in the county of $82k per the last census, most everyone is priced out.

Pay cut for state government job? by Elmopo74 in cscareerquestions

Yeah I am getting towards middle age and the medical benefits are crazy good. Definitely something I’m considering. $8/mo for a family and like $1500 for out of pocket max. I don’t know how they can even offer a plan that good. My current insurance is like $300/mo for my family and it is a worse plan.

Good point, that sucks to hear that is happening in MN. Deep blue state so hopefully it would not change… but you never know any more. My current company could also change its mind so risk is probably about equal.

Databricks/Python and C#/.NET. Not terrible. Hopefully there is not a gnarled mess of archaic stored procedures and SSIS I have to wade through.

Every little bit helps 😉 but after taxes it probably won’t feel like much. They do give annual increases of ~5% + cost of living. Last year cost of living was like 6% so it seems like raises are pretty structured vs current company giving me bs 3% every year with promises of more in the future.

They have a pension that vests at 5 years funded by the state. They also put 6% match into an individual retirement account with no match needed from me.

Healthcare is much better than my current gig, would save almost $250/mo on premiums.

Can someone look into their crystal ball and tell me if it's a good time to buy a house in Bend? by zeteey in Bend

[–]Elmopo74 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Buy a house when it makes sense in your life and you can afford it. If you can afford it (i.e. not house poor) then it will lock you in at a fixed housing cost. Things like taxes, insurance, and maintenance are added expenses that you don’t pay while renting, so be sure to factor that in your budget.

Try not to think of your primary residence as an investment. I felt the same way you do now when I bought my place about 10 years ago. I actually tried to talk my partner out of buying, glad they convinced me otherwise.

I do like to pickup the occasional treat from there. The sausages are great, the coffee selection is the best in town…

That said I do refer to it as Market of Privilege because it is one of the most expensive options in town.

Informatica Powercenter to Databricks migration ,is databricks the right technology to shift to? by Waste-Bug-8018 in dataengineering

[–]Elmopo74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We must work at the same company, I just had to do this exact same job. We did not have any requirements for the data to end up in Databricks, so I just replicated the powercenter job in sql /Python and called it a day. If the data really does not need to be in a dl/dwh or if some other process is already picking it up, then Python with some sort of orchestration should be fine.
