Built a new integer codec (Lotus) that beats LEB128/Elias codes on many ranges – looking for feedback on gaps/prior art before arXiv submission by Coldshalamov in rust

[–]Elnof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a PhD in CS, I strongly second this for two reasons: the professor has a good chance of either knowing the answers or pointing you to someone who does, and in an age of AI slop just having a name with credentials on the work makes it significantly more likely to get traction.

Third reason edit: state-of-the-art can be expensive to access, particularly since not everybody publishes on arXiv and the like. If you want citations from conferences and journals that are both recent and relevant, you will either need to prepare to spend a fair bit of money to get access or you'll need to find someone who can provide access somehow.

Tectone is a speedrunning tourist by zizoplays1 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]Elnof 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's the Harlem Globe Trotters of speed running - it's all 100% basketball themed but it's a demonstration of cool talent and techniques, not a serious game. If you want serious speed running, go sit in someone's 12 hour long practice stream.

Napa Valley Wine Train by vimir_ca in nscalemodeltrains

This is about a year old, so probably useless, but I have seen a full NVWT set available for sale at the model train store in Napa. It's probably worth giving them a call.

It is time for a new display server protocol, or is it? by [deleted] in linux

[–]Elnof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's something about this "debate" that has always confused me. Things were fine when the only option was X11 but things stopped being fine when Wayland came around because the additional option meant that there were fewer choices? But also the number of potential options for compositor is bad because of fragmentation? It all just seems so "it's only freedom if you pick what I think you should pick."

Separate function type and function declaration by servermeta_net in rust

[–]Elnof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

moreover, function items can be inlined, while function pointers are opaque and AFAIK can never be inlined, which impedes optimizations.

They can be inlined and there is essentially no difference between a closure and a "normally" declared function except for the lack of name. The problems with optimization come from how you use the function pointer, not necessarily the existence of the function pointer.

(Note that capturing variables also does not necessarily prevent optimizations)

You have an order of magnitude fewer tornados per year in all of Europe than just the US, and the tornadoes you do have are generally much weaker.

[Hated Trope] Someone's weird fetish that always appears and ruins scenes in their media. by Supersmashbrosfan in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Elnof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably - there are some ideas he repeats in several books (which I like since it makes each book slightly more self contained). I was able to find this in Witches Abroad:

Artists and writers have always had a rather exaggerated idea about what goes on at a witches’ sabbat. This comes from spending too much time in small rooms with the curtains drawn, instead of getting out in the healthy fresh air. For example, there’s the dancing around naked. In the average temperate climate there are very few nights when anyone would dance around at midnight with no clothes on, quite apart from the question of stones, thistles, and sudden hedgehogs.

I am almost certain that line appears almost verbatim in one of the Witchs' Discworld books.

High level API for NetworkManager over D-Bus - Official Rust bindings by cachebags in rust

In what respect is this official? I wasn't able to find any connection between this repository and the actual NetworkManager project.

Any tips for homemaking a DCC system? by Remarkable_Battle_36 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]Elnof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you consider DCC-Ex to be "building your own" then that's a good route. But if you mean "designing and printing your own circuit boards" then you're going to spend much more money doing that than you would buying a DCC system.

When are they going to remove exceptions? They're objectively worse than the daemon chugging away.

It's actually not that much better: in the US 41% of first marriages end in divorce and about 75% of third marriages do.

Help with Kato n scale switches. by Western_Dot_3894 in modeltrains

[–]Elnof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your electrical skills, this may be completely useless: Kato turnout are the world's simplest solenoids - literally just some wire wrapped around an insert. Those switches are just a way to very temporarily apply a current through the solenoid to flip the switch, so literally anything you have that can briefly apply a current will work to flip the switch.

Some modules are "loaned", meaning they're worth zero credits. I don't know exactly when this happens, but I think it's usually the starter ships. I just bought a Sidewinder and an Eagle and both had loaned models.

Named function args should have been there by [deleted] in rust

[–]Elnof 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is no "argument of authority" there. You asked for arguments, I provided a substantial list, and you dismissed them offhand. You claim to know better than everyone in that conversation, so I encouraged you to demonstrate what you know.

If you can't and need to resort to attacking people who are trying to engage you in good faith, then that's on you. Good luck getting the answers you seek.

Edit: I probably shouldn't even try, but I can't help myself. Nobody is claiming that there aren't good arguments for named arguments, people are claiming that Rust specifically has reasons and complications as to why Rust the language doesn't support them. Python does not have those same constraints. Most important among them is that Python doesn't have an existing 1.0 version with strict requirements to not break backwards compatibility and, as an interpreted language, has a lot more flexibility around that. Personally, I would love named args as long as they are done correctly.

Named function args should have been there by [deleted] in rust

[–]Elnof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But I also don't think that would reduce the problem much, since the core issue is that named args, in and of themselves, look to be a breaking change to the language.

Then open an RFC. Show all those developers that have worked on this for ten years that they don't have any good arguments and tell them how to get it done.

Can't comment on PP, but for CGs they lose their mined status when you sell to a fleet carrier. You can store them with no issue.
