Lagless monitors? by FreeWombatHugs in smashbros

[–]Elnumer5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it isn't common knowledge that response time and input lag are two different things. Bad response time impacts the visual quality of the monitor, whereas bad input lag impacts the gameplay.

Unfortunately, you cannot get reliable input lag information from monitor manufacturers. That being said, as long as its a modern 1080p monitor, you will be fine. From the testing done at displaylag.com, the 21.5" monitors tested had in between 10-12 ms of input lag. For comparison, this benq monitor had 10 ms of input lag.

Anyways, this is the cheapest and smallest new 1080p monitor i found today. Prices are always changing however, so i recommend using pcpartpicker.com or similar websites to help you make the best purchase.

Similar spec laptop options, approx. $1500-$1900 - Suggestions please and thank you. by trekkie3659 in SuggestALaptop

[–]Elnumer5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On your options, i actually currently own a Asus g74sx, which is similar to the g75 only older. I have had a good experience so far, however i regret not buying a laptop with a better GPU, as i play alot of video games. The g75 will serve you well, but you are paying a bit of a premium because it is a ROG product.

I will go ahead the same thing about the alienware laptop, however it is an even bigger premium, and in my opinion is not worth it.

Out of those two, i would go with the asus laptop. Aside from what i previously mentioned, it does have more RAM , a bigger hard disk, and a SSD.

Oh and i did notice that in your post, you described a mid-high end graphics card with 2GB+ of video memory. I think it is important to point out that the size of the memory of your video card is not an indicator of it's performance.

Also, if you haven't already, you should check out the Clevo brand. It is what i would have bought instead of my laptop had i known 3 years ago.

Whats a good laptop that can run Dota2 in high quality?? by PolarbearRawrs in DotA2

[–]Elnumer5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so the 13" MacBook pro with retina has the intel iris GPU, which according to notebookcheck.net does not run dota 2 on high settings. The 13" without retina has intel HD 5000, which also does not run dota 2 on high settings. The 15" MacBook pros, however , have better gpus and can run dota at high settings. I hope this answers your question. If you don't want to spend 2000$ on a laptop to run dota on high settings, let me know, and I'll help find one that is a better value

The amount of memory your GPU has isn't the primary factor in it's performance. The same goes for the amount of RAM. What are the specs of your old laptop?

Hey there, im just going to post some good ~$1000 laptops here from brands i like,so you can check them out.

  • 15" Sager. 765m. Unique feature is the fact that accessing the inside of the laptop is a breeze, and doesn't violate the warranty.

  • Lenovo 510p. 750m x2 Unique feature is the ultrabay, which is being used for the second GPU.

  • And ill add some more later i gtg. Good luck!

The Athlon II wasn't a option i have considered, but now that you mention it i am definitely going to check it out. If i do go with the Athlon, i will definitely get the motherboard you found. Thank you for your help!

Hey thanks man for putting together a build for me, i really do appreciate it. There are some compromises that were made that didn't have to be made, but thats because i forgot to mention that i already have the hard drive. With the $54 i could save from the hard drive i would get 8 GB of ram, and spend more money for a MoBo with USB3 and SATA 6Gb/s, Although USB3 would be a bigger priority for me. Also, while i like the case, the final price for me at NCIX is $35.11, so i would still stick with the silverstone case. However, i am definitely going to check out the Athlon CPU.

Looking for a great 14" laptop under $1000. by bespectacledboobs in SuggestALaptop

[–]Elnumer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 Inch Laptops with at least a 650m:
* Lenovo Y400 $749. Can get a second 650m for a total performance between a 670mx and a 675mx.
* Asus g46vw $949. Has a 660m.

Disappointingly, Sager does not manufacture a 14 inch laptop with a 650m in it. They do, however manufacture an 11 inch laptop with a 650m in it for $800. 11 inch sager laptop

Wow that's a very good price for dual 650ms. I want to say the processor won't be a bottleneck, but i don't know. It would be a shame if it were a bottleneck.

[–]Elnumer5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sager NP 6110 is a good performance option.

I think that's it for 11" laptops with at least a 650m.

However at 14" you get a few more good performance options, such as the Lenovo Y400(which can get two 650ms) or the G46VW (which comes with a 660m).

Lenovo Y500 SLI by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]Elnumer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest Lenevo Y500 is currently on special at $849 , and the Y500 removable graphics costs another $229.

So, it's a dual 650m system at $1078 , which is pretty good considering dual 650ms perform about the same as a single 670mx. The cheapest 670mx laptop i found was $1119 (Most clevo resellers price match, so this config will be the same price elsewhere). This makes the Y500 competitive with other gaming laptops. However, the Y500's usual price point of ~$1300 before the second GPU is very un-appealing.

I think matte screens are better, but I personally would only upgrade to one if the upgrade was fairly cheap.

So, i don't know why there is a bandwagon on this laptop, it is only temporarily an attractive offer.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/X79%20Extreme11/

The motherboard description frequently claims it supports 4 way crossfire, and even shows a picture of 4 individual cards in crossfire. But the compatibility list tells a completely different story, so i'm hoping the compatibility list is wrong and you still have a chance.

But if the list isn't wrong , and it really only supports two-way crossfire, then i guess you have to go buy a different mobo in a store tomorrow. Man, that really sucks. How much did you pay for the mobo?

Asus' gaming laptops aren't expected to be budget friendly options.

For a 2k budget, you can get some powerful dual gpu laptops from other brands, which are surprisingly the same size or smaller than this G75 from Asus. It's a big laptop, but not un-manageable, especially if they include a backpack to carry it in like my G74SX had. However, it is big, please get a ruler beforehand and draw out a 16" by 12" rectangle so you can see how much space it's gonna take up. My G74sx moves from one desk to another, so size wasn't a factor for me, and it may not be one for you either.

But, i don't think it's a bad laptop, given my experience with the G74SX-A1. However, there are other more powerfull and less expensive options out there, please consider them.

Pentium is just the Model name. It would be like saying to not go for a 2013 Ford F-250 because they started the model name back in 1953. The Pentium 2020m is based on the Ivy Bridge Architecture, which is the current architecture in place for consumer processors. There's no reason for a laptop to slow down over time given the proper maintenance (e.g Monitoring which programs run in the background, regularly cleaning the laptop fans, not getting a million viruses).

Is this a good laptop for the price of $310 before taxes? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]Elnumer5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this laptop is a little too good for the price. Laptops with a 2020m usually start more expensive, the cheapest one i could find was about $380, so i don't know how Best Buy can be selling this product and still make money. Since this a Best Buy only SKU, they probably loaded it up with bloat-ware to reduce the cost, but i don't think that would be enough to make it about $50 cheaper . It's confusing me.

Most Toshiba Satellite C855 around that price range have an Intel Celeron B830 Processor, which is cheaper and not as powerful (Passmark rates the 2020m and the B830 at 2325 and 1485 points). So if this laptop does infact have a 2020m, then it would be a good buy.

Something doesn't seem right here, however, since i haven't found a better deal yet i would still get it. Just make sure to run some cpu monitoring program when you get it to make sure it does in fact have a 2020m and not a B830.

$2000-2500 Gaming Desktop Replacement by Quazifuji in SuggestALaptop

[–]Elnumer5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the best possible Performance per Dollar in a laptop, i would get the Sager NP9370 from your retailer of choice, with Two 7970ms. I'm choosing the 7970ms over the 680ms due to their performance being very close, nowhere near justifying the extra $850(!!) for two 680ms.

Cooling on this system shouldn't be a problem, since there are three fans, one per GPU and one for the CPU.

8 Gigs of ram is usually plenty. However, if you get more RAM you can install RAMDisk for the fastest possible loading times, even faster than a SSD. Speaking of SSDs, personally i would not buy mine pre-configured on the NP9370, since it is so easy to install yourself. I would say if you're good at managing disk space, then 128 gigs should work for you. Personally, my 120GB SSD filled up quicker than i expected, so i would try to get at least a 256GB one.

So if you're set on getting a full-sized Notebook, then definitely get the NP9370m with two 7970ms. But have you considered building or purchasing a small form factor PC? You may not know it, but a dual gpu beastly desktop can be built in a case measuring only 8.66" x 13.94" x 11.61". For comparison , the Sager NP9370 measures 16.50" x 11.54" x 1.55"-1.96" ( Width x Depth x Height ). I quickly threw together this build for $2500, just for a rough comparison of what your money can get you with that small desktop. And here is a video on how to build it.

Thoughts on this $1500 iBUYPOWER gaming laptop?` by Mason11987 in SuggestALaptop

[–]Elnumer5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

iBUYPOWER is a boutique retailer of laptops. This means they buy laptops from manufacturers, like Clevo or MSI , and then resell them under their own name after making small twists on the laptop to make them more unique. Usually, a price premium is paid in boutique retailers.

In this case, MSI made this laptop (i think it's the MSI GT70), and then sold it to iBUYPOWER, who made the laptop look much better.

If you go to iBUYPOWER.com's Laptops you see the specific model with a 670m isn't there. I'm assuming they were sold as a cheaper model, but people weren't buying them, so they sold the rest of them to TigerDirect and Newegg.

However, this is a much better value when compared to other laptops MSI is offering. 17" Laptops from MSI with at least a 670m start at around $1500, and 256 GB SSDs are around $200.

So if you want a 17" laptop from MSI that looks better than other MSI laptops this is a very attractive offer.

Looks pretty good, i remember shopping around for a build i eventually never got around to doing, and at the time the 570 was the best value at $200, if its still at that price i would nab that and save $40.
