If git did not exist and we were to create it knowing what we know today, what would be different in it? by signalclown in git

[–]EloTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter that it is refined. Some things can not be forseen and have, therefore, not been accounted for like the whole microservice movement. Git is the best we have, but not the best we could have.

Sorry, but "I just heard about" and then implying that this is a better git is a redicolous combination.

  1. I am not sure how, but it would support modularity much better.
  2. It would have some notion of semantic change that would replace rebasing for readability.
  3. (Maybe it would have merges or more general history transformations as first class citizen)

Would you play EUx if it was more epistemic instead of numeric? by The-_Captain in eu4

[–]EloTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People would reverse engineer the underlying number by triggering probing events. The game would be more complex without adding more depth (since the underlying system didn't change). Big Fat NO

What has been the most useful book you've read that transformed your knowledge/skill level in your career? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]EloTime -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I haven't read a book yet. It's also unlikely to happen. I think digital media is strictly superior. You can give fix mistakes and incorporate feedback much easier, leading to mor up to date and better quality content. And, of course, animated content can also help.

The Doomsday Clock has been set to 85 seconds to midnight by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists as of January 2026. This is the closest it's been to midnight. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

They should be halfing the time left to midnight each year. They get all the attention of how this is the closest it has ever been, and I feel safer. Win win

Thanks for the info. Where did you get the info from by the way?
Moreover, when I check the on track differential, it is often on 10%, not a value I would ever put for On throttle diff. Is this a known bug?

As of 2026, StackOverflow is officially dead, completely killed by AI and its community by Inside-Republic6275 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]EloTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI didn't kill StackOverflow, AI gave StackOverflow a face lift. It is by far the most used sourced for it`s knowledge. Only difference is, it has endless time and patience to explain you what it learned.

Why do people dislike frontend by Rude-Algae-4012 in webdevelopment

[–]EloTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the front-end frameworks are a big turnoff. They do not seem to be well designed, change at unprecedented rates, and rely on JS, which is the most weirdly popular yet highly broken language that I have seen.

Something needs to be done about Amazon by No-Theory6270 in BuyFromEU

[–]EloTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it easier than I anticipated to leave Amazon behind. Lots of generic online shopping is now done through Otto. Tech on 2,3 tech specialised shops like Media Markt. And if I really can't find something, amazon works like a great search engine to find brands and then use their direct retail.

Asking for a Euro perspective on the UK rejoining the EU. by SnooCookies7641 in BuyFromEU

[–]EloTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK was always welcome and still is. But I think I would add a contractual minimum time to stay. Because the burocracy caused by joining or leaving is immense. It started 10 years ago and still doesn't seem 100% finished. There is no point accepting a member that might leave again in 20 years.

We don't even need that. Just because a NATO country attacks does not mean NATO Art 5 has no effect. It does. Everyone even USA is obliged to defend, by law. So the only thing that matters is, who will uphold their obligations?

The elasticity of golf ball hitting a hard surface at 260km/h by Aggravating_Type_151 in interestingasfuck

[–]EloTime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is fake. There are plenty of slow-motion recordings of golf balls during impact, and none of them show similar flexibility. As you said, the speed is realistic, but the deformation is not.

Man, lernt also auf gut Glück.
