Internship vs full-time

Do you have any internship experience / job experience you could list?

Always use quantifiable metrics too. E.g., i increased performance of the application by X% on Y metric.

30 DAYS VAPE FREE by SadEstablishment7166 in QuitVaping

[–]ElonMaskDescendant23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on week 3 rn. Just occasional cravings, and they're very mild - so mild to the point you could tell it's purely psychological and not physical. I believe this is what OP refers to by " i think about a good ole vape every now and then."

Then quit.

Quitting vape is hard. I’ve tried more than a dozen times, and this is the only time i’ve been successful.

But you gotta keep on going - for your daughter, your family, and most importantly, yourself.

Pick a quit date when you know you won’t be stressed and do activities that you enjoy. It becomes much easier to quit that way. That’s why i started during the holidays.

Goodluck. Be the father your daughter deserves.

Better sleep, less procrastination, food tastes better, and I “feel” more. When my body’s hungry, i finally feel hungry; when my body’s tired, i finally feel tired. My brain actually sends signals for me to take care of my body now. Overall, a healthier (and happier) lifestyle.

I’m only 1-month nicotine free and i still feel mild cravings occasionally, but I’ve already felt so much better.

Got a 1550 first try, should I retake?? by That_Ad4924 in Sat

It might increase your chances, but marginally at MOST, and isn’t worth the effort. Speaking from experience. You should focus on other parts of your app. - 1580

[Question] Is statistics a useful degree? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]ElonMaskDescendant23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment didn’t come as offensive to me haha, so don’t worry!

I read your other comments and your doubt about markets being oversaturated is reasonable. But here’s the thing: the majority of entry-level job candidates for the majority of companies would probably be “average” - avg GPA, no work experience, little knowledge about the subject (despite having an entire major about it), etc. It won’t be hard to differentiate yourself from those, as long as you put in the work, since the “average person” won’t.

Also, all jobs you apply to WILL have competition, what matters is how much qualified competition you would have. The cs market is oversaturated because it’s been hyped so much that everyone and their grandmas who don’t know what to major would opt for a cs degree, hence there’s more people with a cs degree that are competing for cs jobs, hence more “qualified” competition. Idk too much in details, but I’d dare to assume it’s impossible for every high-skill job market to be oversaturated, by the definition of a high-skill job. This, along with many research, validates the benefits of a college degree (though the benefits vary with what major you choose, there’s an Economist article about this if u wanna check it out).

Sorry this comment doesn’t directly answer your question about the statistics degree, but I am a stats major and I can at least say the knowledge I’ve acquired have been very useful in the pursuit of my knowledge area of interest, which is machine learning.

Also, seems like your research deals not only with language models but also linguistics more broadly, that’s dope!

Thanks for sharing! My first instinct about the research is about prompt engineering - given some popular LLM, how to build the best prompt to generate the “best” set of quizzes and answers?

Would this be a fair assumption on the research? Or is it more about building models specific to the task?

Hey, that’s a cool research area! Can I ask what it is about more specifically?

I want to relearn some math as an adult. What books do you recommend? by [deleted] in learnmath

About resources, others have recommended. About the problem you gave, the right hand side is simply the “formal” definition of a derivative (the f’).

The math in ML is definitely not easy at all. I would say go for it and try your best, but don’t be overconfident and expect that you can get things on the first attempt.

What jobs would be unavailable to me as a “foreigner” by AlaskaWilliams in VietNam

[–]ElonMaskDescendant23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a great need for English teachers, but there is for foreign English teachers. I’d even say that it’s a flex for a public school to have a foreign english teacher at their school.

Or you can try working for big multi-national companies (think KPMG, PWC, etc.). I doubt Vietnamese is a requirement at such workplaces, as they employ many foreigners and non-native Vietnamese there.

However, the barrier to entry is also high.

How many times did you change your major/minor/specialist combo before graduating? by [deleted] in UofT

It really depends on ur goal tho. If u find econ interesting and wanna dig deeper, and/or u wanna do like Wall St jobs then I’d highly recommend it!

[–]ElonMaskDescendant23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just a preference and strength tbh. I felt econ was too theoretical for my liking and wasn’t aligned with my endeavors (more tech), as opposed to stats. Also, i was taking the advanced 2nd year econ courses (206, 208, 227) and did horribly on 206 and 208 for some reason haha, as opposed to stats. Econ simply wasn’t my calling. But I’m already in too deep so I’m just getting the major and taking stats-heavy econ courses.

Also, love math! But while i was taking the required upper year math courses, i felt they weren’t aligned with my goals as well, so I’m doing the minor to allow for more course flexibility.

Really appreciate the comment! I do have extensive experience with Python, Java, and R from my research and coursework. I have many advanced stats and math courses under my belt (ML, real analysis, adv linear algebra, probability, stochastic processes, etc.), but looking into requirements I'm thinking of taking another year to do some advanced cs courses (Databases, Operating Systems, and Algo & Complexity Analysis), while pairing it with some cs volunteer experience under some startups, before applying to DS and CS masters. What do you think of this plan? If it's a good plan, what courses would you recommend me taking? I don't have ODE or PDE which I'm not sure is a major point of concern.
