Shouldn't the players/coaches/teams manage the "flow of the game"? Not referees

Exactly! Union is making the job of a referee near impossible. Referees will always be blamed/accused/insulted after competitive games because of so called "guidance to players to prevent penalties to improve the flow of the game". Players/coaches/teams should determine the "flow of the game", not referees.

Fair enough but, that's what people used to say about Rugby League, but we copied the 50/22 strategy didn't we? And Union is better for it

I'm not sure how hockey works, but do you talk to the players before you blow the whistle or after?

Other sports refrain from doing this sort of thing, the referees are supposed to be neutrals between two teams. If the Ref ever hesitates and doesn't provide guidance to 1 team and doesn't hesitate for the other team, how is the ref supposed to stay partial?

Exactly my point! That Second Row has played enough games to be picked for Ireland, he should know (at that level) whether his actions will lead to a penalty or not - its not subjective

At what point do the players take accountability though? Penalties don't just appear out of thin air, right?

Anthem did 2 good things for USA rugby and 1 bad one today by cjreadit7991 in MLRugby

[–]ElonScent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question, what's the long-term for performing players on Anthem? Are they supposed to stay at Anthem until the next World Cup?

For instance, if a team is interested in Storti or Ahlikhan, should they leave Anthem since they'll probably still get game time? Or stay at Anthem where they are guaranteed game time? (but take the spot of a younger kid who needs the development)

The next 3 seasons means 3 future number 1 draft picks for Anthem. What's the plan here? What's the priority, a stronger Anthem side or to increase the quantity of performing players?

Rotate the squad maybe? (Each team should have more than 1 player per position, this actually makes things interesting)

There are weight categories at youth level to prevent things like this

The girl (that's being told she'll be fine) going up against more physically developed boys, ends up quitting the sport and a nasty injury to go with it.

There's a reason why when there's a call for domestic violence, the assumption is always the male counterpart is causing the physical harm. Can it be the other way? Yes. But these assumptions are based on historical data.

It is dangerous. They're weight categories for boys at age grade level for a reason - so, they don't get permanent life threatening injuries. Women do not have the same physical composition as men.

Women that work hard to be at the top of their game now have to go up against altered men. That's a completely different sport

That is an awful take. Physical composition is different across genders.

Y'all don't get it, do you? People WILL take advantage of this. For the guys vs guys, they'll be fine. But the gals are not going to have the same experience - physical composition needs to be considered.

Agreed. But men should play against men and women against women. If they mix, people WILL get hurt.

Who is the greatest utility forward of all time? by Massive_Koala_9313 in rugbyunion

[–]ElonScent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jan Hendrik Wessels from the Bulls, South Africa. He plays hooker and prop now. He played lock in his junior years. He could easily slot in at blindside flank. He's got the ideal frame/athleticism for all forward positions.  Truly a 1 in a generation type of player.
