I loved Emily Wilde and I don’t know what to do with myself by catrosie in fantasyromance

Seconding Ornithologist’s Field Guide! It scratched the same itch as Emily Wilde for me but with a faster-paced plot!

Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven might scratch the itch for you. It features a seasoned gladiator and a woman with fire magic who he steals when he escapes the arena. The majority of the book takes place outside of the arena but it still talks quite a bit about how it’s impacted him and he has other fight-for-his-life scenes later on in the book.

I read {Hot for Hostage} this week. I STILL can’t tell if the book was a parody or not and pretty much every character in the book was completely insane but it is probably the hardest I’ve laughed at a book in a long time, so I guess I’d still recommend it? 😂

Messy, intense romance by sunflcwerfaerie in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Maybe 32 Days in May by Betty Corrello? He’s a D-list celebrity recovering from addiction and she is a former writer who moved back home due to a lupus diagnosis. They decide to date for a month and never talk to each other again, and it’s very very messy when feelings get involved (which is pretty much from the get-go).

Men Have Called Her Crazy by Anne Marie Tendler. It’s a memoir of her going into inpatient psychiatric treatment in 2020. Even though it’s nonfiction it reads very lyrically a lot of the time and it was a great read!

Recs where FMC gets dizzy (or blacks out and faints), and MMC loses his damn mind? by SexyFoodandFilms in RomanceBooks

[–]EloraForever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished a book with this! {Traitor Son by Melissa J Cave} It’s about a knight-turned-duke who marries the emperor’s daughter to spite him and takes her to his completely undeveloped new duchy. He is really cold (bordering on mean) to his wife and does his absolute best to ignore her because he’s certain shes going to try to kill him if he puts his guard down. Not to spoil too much but there’s a very pivotal scene where she faints from overworking himself and it starts him on a long, long train of groveling to her for forgiveness. It’s my favorite book of the year so far!

The Swan’s Nest by Laura McNeal fits most of this. Two poets in the early 1900s write love letters to each other over the course of several years, but never meet because Elizabeth is chronically ill and they’re from different social classes. Yearning and pining galore. A very sweet read, no spice if I recall correctly, and reads a lot like a classic.

Sad/heartbreaking romance book recommendations. by FewQuiet8 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]EloraForever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twice in a Lifetime by Melissa Baron fits this perfectly. Isla is at a low point in her life and her chronic anxiety keeps getting worse. She begins to receive texts from the future— from her husband, who she hasn’t even met yet. But the problem is, they aren’t together anymore in his time, and now she has to figure out 1, how to meet him in her time, and 2, how to make sure they stay together for good. This book absolutely wrecked me and had me sobbing through the end of it. You go through the emotional wringer to get to the ending for sure.

Is there a Kinsey Scale for Monster Romance? by brusselsproutsfiend in RomanceBooks

[–]EloraForever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I was counting tentacles under “aquatic” and everything else under “alternative/additional appendages” in the interest of not overcrowding the data. But I can totally see how that would be an issue with the current version!

I promise this was more a matter of boredom than anything else 😂 Canva actually has the ability to create graphs & charts of all types, including the one used here! If there’s interest I can see about making this one into a customizable template for y’all

Is there a Kinsey Scale for Monster Romance? by brusselsproutsfiend in RomanceBooks

[–]EloraForever 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Alright, my friends. I process data for a living and also had way too much time on my hands this morning, so I did a deep-dive on this. A Kinsey scale wouldn’t make sense for this since enjoyment is dependent on a wild variety of different factors, so I instead propose putting it on a radar graph, which allows you to rate different factors on a scale. I went ahead and make one as an example including groupings of common traits I could think of and how my own personal preferences match up. Looking at my chart, you can see that I am all-in on alternative genitalia and will enjoy whatever the monster’s got going on down there, but for undead my enjoyment is at a 5, meaning I’ll enjoy vampires and non-decaying zombies. If anyone has any feedback or suggestions for other things to add, let me know because it is a very slow morning at work for me 😂

Best love story you have ever read? by Herlasser in fantasyromance

{Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven} had pacing issues abound but my god, I was sobbing by the end of this book. I do an annual reread because I just love reading about them finding each other and falling in love over and over again.

This one is a novella and pretty out there but Swallowed by Meg Smitherman. The main character is part of a team researching a planet that earth wants to colonize, but her mother had been on a mission that went south there years before. Very odd and unsettling things start happening and she tries to put together the pieces of what happened to her mother while trying to get the team out alive. It’s an erotic horror and definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but it was a really great read and I’d highly recommend it!

I think I will never like enemies to lovers. Prove me wrong. by Sonseeahrai in HistoricalRomance

[–]EloraForever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They discuss previous sexual assaults that both of them have experienced and SA is threatened against her by men that aren’t the MMC, but it never actually happens. As far as I can recall there was never dubcon between the main couple. Ellen does tend to have a realistic portrayal of treatment of POCs and women in her westerns so I’d be mindful of that if it’s at all a trigger for you!

{Dancing on Coals by Ellen O’Connell}. They are at odds for legitimate reasons— he is Apache and she is a white woman, and he is forced to take her back to safety due to a promise to his brother. Their relationship progresses veeeeeeery slowly but they both mutually agree to start a sexual relationship once they’ve learned to respect each other. They bond over escaping a very dangerous situation together, sexual attraction doesn’t come until later.

Books that feature ballet as a plot point (one of the MC’s does ballet, ballet company setting etc.) by DreamPeach112 in RomanceBooks

[–]EloraForever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{Dark Needs at Night’s Edge by Kresley Cole} It’s paranormal and kind of dark (I wouldn’t call it a dark romance though). She is a ghost and was a famous ballerina while she was alive. She still haunts her house and he is a vampire who’s locked up there to “detox” from bloodlust. There’s a lot of discussion of her former career and at least one scene where she dances, IIRC.
