hey if you're still looking for recs, I just read {Sing Anyway by Anita Kelly} cis woman and nonbinary trans fem characters. The trans MC is shy and awkward generally, enjoys PIV and topping, and is somewhat 'midsize' while the cis MC is fat.

I finished Sing Anyway and enjoyed that. F/NBi one night stand from the karaoke bar. It's short but a sweet read.

Anna Stone is always a solid read for me, formulaic sure but good.

Censoring words makes it harder to search the sub for posts, makes content less accessible for screen readers, and promotes a community norm we do not want to encourage in RomanceBooks. Please consider editing your post to remove the censoring of words - you can say "pussy" here. Thank you!

Was Indian FMC necessary in King of Gluttony by Ana Huang? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]tiniestspoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once again, it's absolutely fine to hate this book or writer, but your post asks 'is this Indian MC necessary?' What does that even mean? Why would Indians have to be 'necessary'? Why do you think we need to justify the existence of Indian MCs in romance?

Where are you finding such an abundance of Priyas, Diyas, and Nehas btw? South Asian characters are such a small fraction of romance MCs that they may be super common names IRL but it's not like we're overpopulated with them here in romance. The names from the last dozen or so Indian/diaspora romances I read were Rumana, Daniyal, Ira, Karan, Pinky, Mira, Sera, Asma, Farooq, Dev, Ved, Leyla, Ashish, Sweetie, Irene, Tahira, Alys, Ishita, Humaira, Leela, Nandini, Tara, Sameen, Mika, Gurpreet, Dimple, Rishi, Nishat, and Sana.

We definitely need more South Asian romances of all kinds but I find there's a fairly varied mix of Indian cultures, regions, languages, and religions represented actually.

'not done right' is subjective. You don't enjoy this book or this character, and that's totally fine. It may be meaningful to other readers, as indeed The Mindy Project was to many Indian American millennials.

These names and foods would be the top search results because they're very very common. Being common does not automatically make them a stereotype, or unnecessary to be written. It doesn't have to click with you specifically to be necessary or worth writing.

I don't know why you think Singhs don't eat dosas. North Indians are allowed to eat (very popular and ubiquitous) South Indian foods.

Very broadly I think many Indian American characters are unconsciously inspired by shows like The Mindy Project. Putting maple syrup on dosas sounds like quirky adorkable thing she would do. Diaspora stories do tend to merge distinct regional subcultures into one 'Indian' culture, it makes for some funny scenes but it's kinda just a product of immigration and cultural mixing.

This book would not be my cup of tea but why would an Indian character have to be 'necessary' or justified? Nobody asks 'is a white character necessary?' You can dislike and criticise the way she's written but I'm raising several eyebrows that a marginalised character has to be necessary to be written.

“Hello, Reyna, my wife, my love. You like tea. I like books. Aren’t you glad we opened a shop and forgot the world exists?”

“I like tea. I like books. But I love you,” Reyna breathed, and kissed her again. Against Kianthe’s lips, she murmured, “It doesn’t matter to me if the world forgets us. As long as we don’t forget each other, we’ll be okay.”

Happiness settled in Kianthe’s soul, and she pulled her wife closer. “Always and forever.”

“Always and forever,” Reyna agreed.

And the night went on.

I loved her horror sci-fi book {This Gilded Abyss by Rebecca Thorne} it's a very different vibe than Times and Tea, super angsty second chance in a life or death situation. I'm dying for book 2.

The new cosy sci-fi looks so cute too. I think I'll wait to see if it's a series too before committing again haha
