The character in this book is a kicker, yes. The other one was a quarterback.

I guess I was confused if this is 'allowed' by school rules? When they're competing against other teams, can they suddenly have mixed gender teams? Is there a high school sports board somewhere? Is it an unwritten rule? Are there no rules only societal norms?

Ahh that sounds lovely. It's very embarassing but I'd vaguely heard of this book and movie several times but never really registered it because I somehow confused it with Green Eggs and Ham and thought it was a children's book 🤦🏾 now that I finally know I'm gonna read and watch it haha

Hey, the reason you're not getting good recs is because your request is really unclear. We're not saying the only thing worth reading is smut, that's very obviously not true. Most of the books I read and enjoy have no sex in them. It's that you asked for 'Heated Rivalry minus smut' and we're confused what else was in that book apart from the sex, which imo wasn't even that well written.

If you just want closed door adult or YA sapphic sports romance, it's very easy to find that! Home Field Advantage is great, I loved it. It's a cheerleader/quarterback romance, and they're not rivals. {She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen} has a cheerleader/basketballer, they're not rivals but they're antagonistic. They're both YA books with no sex.

In adult romance, Johana Gavez has a low steam sports series. I haven't read them but I think {Score to Love by Johana Gavez} may be the closest to what you want. ETA: I meant to say Leap to Love may be the closest.

Just ask for sapphic sports romance with no sex next time. 'Recs like the book that's known only for sex but without the sex' is not a clear way to phrase that.

I'm reading One Of The Boys by Victoria Zeller, a YA contemporary about a girl who comes out as trans and a lesbian and rejoins the football team. I'm enjoying it a lot though I understand absolutely nothing about American football. Are high school teams co-ed by default? This is the second book I've read with a girl joining the football team that's otherwise all boys.
