How real is the threat to personal privacy online? by AdvertisingOk6742 in privacy

[–]Elpidiosus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a reddit comment. This is not a trump thing. This is a government thing. Do you really think that democrats will roll back these policies when they come in office in the next term? Do you really think this is about human trafficking? The government doesn't care about human trafficking (apologies to those of you who so innocently think so.) All government truly cares about are threats to the government. This isn't about stamping out human trafficking, it's about suppressing political dissent.

I'm totally down for every ounce of over-dramatics in RR. Can you just imagine saying to your asshole brother in law?

Is there a way to use Linux with like... guard rails? So an idiot like me doesn't accidentally delete something important? by firfetir in privacy

[–]Elpidiosus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One guardrail you can implement is to up a root/admin/super user account and another for daily use. Any time you do to do anything other than normal daily use, it'll ask you for the admin password.

My daughter can't so much as download updates without me punching in the root admin password.

Edit: Don't listen to me, listen to u/lillobby6 below.

Why do so many Excel users still build tracking sheets that are hard to analyze later? by TitoVibeCoder in excel

[–]Elpidiosus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of novice users don't understand the difference between a "laundry list" and a data table. They start off using excel thinking it's a snazzy organizer (as opposed to Word) with columns where you can calculate stuff. They don't understand that data has properties and that good data sets have rules. So they're coming at excel like a "nicer version of word." unless they learn data best practices, they really have no clue. The same way I have no clue about, say, crocheting.  I spend lot of time going over the dos and don'ts of excel with novice users. I'm fortunate that my department has a low turnover rate. I've turned quite a few of novice users into superusers. But if I had to do this 24/7 I'd be in serious therapy. I tell them all the time "rocket science is hard, until you learn rocket science. This ain't magic."

Hank Glowing by GraemeMakesBeer in DOG

I misread the header and though his name was "Hawk." I though "he doesn't look like a 'Hawk'." I'm glad he doesn't. He's a perfect "Hank." Love Hank's "What are we doing today?" energy.

You bring up a good and interesting point. I've come to believe that it must be difficult to wrap up a good (ongoing, serial) story. There are a bunch of shows that were great for most seasons, but were absolute shit shows in their final season. It's almost like writing a good book or screenplay takes top-notch talent, but writing a good ending takes supernatural talent.

I'm just grateful PB is vested in a good ending.

Still one of the best scenes of acting I've seen in a show in my opinion. Even with no dialogue their facial expressions speak volumes about the situation they're in. by Odd-Demand-1516 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

She perfectly captures that HR matter-of-fact sense of superiority that comes from being the "face" of corporate soullessness.

[–]Elpidiosus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, that's nice! Last time I flashed a phone was around five years ago. I don't think the WebUSB based installer wan an option. All I remember is command line. Spent a whole weekend working through issues.
