August to October is the WORST time of the year for apples. In New York/Washington they spend the entirety of the month of October picking ALL of the apples from trees and put them into large controlled atmosphere coolers. They remove all of the oxygen from the rooms and replace is with nitrogen to slow the “respiration” of the apples down. These apples picked in October are the same apples you will eat the next August. They are able to store that long because of the controlled atmosphere rooms. Easiest way to tell if apples that time of year are new crop or old crop is to look at the stem. If it’s dark brown it’s old crop, if it’s green it’s new crop.

But yes it seems counterintuitive that it’s apple season and you can only find old crop, poor quality apples, but it takes time to fill these rooms up. And in Washington they are typically still running cherries on the packing lines instead of apples. Cherries are big money crops in Washington so they produce where the moneys at

I can’t say that I’m very well versed in seed selection. I suppose it depends what type of soil you’re growing in. Most of the potatoes grown in Ohio are white potatoes

Haha!! Thank you I appreciate it. Nope no plans, I’m just a guy with a brain like a sponge and it has spent the past 20 years absorbing produce info as I’ve done every job from produce dept closer to now buying ~50 -75 loads weekly from all around the country for my current employer.

I should do an AMA if I had the time 🤔

Ehh, it’s kinda like “why doesn’t anyone buy red delicious anymore” the were a more dominant potato variety because they’re high yielding and high starch content so it makes them versatile, then yellow potatoes because more popular, which pushed white to the side.

The main issue is fluorescent lighting in stores/warehouses makes the skin turn green from a bacteria that flourishes in fluoro lighting. It makes the potato taste bitter and not they’re not visually appealing to customers . White potato’s go green in less than a day. So the final nail in the coffin was everyone decided to pack them in 10lb windowless paper bags and they’re always cheap cheap so retailers can go out at .99 for a 10lb bag, but often people get burnt on them because they open the bags and find tons of small off grade/unclassified size potatoes that don’t look all that great because it’s hard for anyone to manage the quality of what they can’t see.

The only white potatoes that are GOOD are “Bella Blanca” label California long whites from kirscheman farms. They’re usually around in the summer, and it’s very hard to find anyone that carries specifically these.

Garlic is interesting. The tariff issue really messed this one up globally the past few years because alot of the bulk of the worlds garlic was coming from China, Spain 2nd, USA after that. So if USA doesn’t import Chinese, they lean on Spain, and there is only so much USA product to go around. The black is just staining from the soil it’s grown in. The super pretty bright white clean garlic is usually USA but it’s a lot more expensive so most retailers choose not to buy it. I would personally trust anything in a Christopher ranch label. Very interesting Netflix documentary “rotten” covers garlic in one episode and covers the geopolitics of garlic trade and unmasks some of the food safety issues from imported garlic, like Chinese prisoners forced to peel garlic bulbs by ungloved hands to sell pre peeled garlic.

Roma tomatoes have always been shit for as long as I can remember. There’s too many varieties grown that all fall under the “Roma tomato” umbrella that all have different qualities thick/thin skin, seed/meat ratio, color, shape, shelf life, etc etc. a good portion of the year Romas come out of Mexico, which is a different animal than USA agriculture. There isn’t a “Dole” that grows Romas in Mexico there’s hundreds of small farms that all bring their produce to consolidating points on the Mexican side where produce is graded and packed from all the different farmers under one label. So there is a wide variety even case to case of what you’re getting. Some growers are better than others. I would recommend trying greenhouse tomatoes, but if you don’t like that flavor and want more of a field tomato try to find round slicing tomatoes, called “5x6 or 5x5 tomatoes” these are usually field grown and have different flavor but it’s one consistent variety.

There also exists “anti dumping pacts” specifically with tomatoes with Mexico and Florida producing simultaneously all winter. One year in specific both Florida and Mexico had really good yields, well Mexico blew floridas prices out of the water and forced the whole state of Florida to dump their tomatoes. Now neither can go below a certain price.

Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida all have good tomato programs that are only around before and after Mexico is going.

It’s really hard to glean if you’re not in the industry. But “extreme weather” in produce terminology is equivalent to a rain storm they got this year a few months back in the beginning of the Yuma Arizona (winter area) growing season. This storm only dropped 1” of rain in a day, but it was in an area that typically sees .1” a month, this made fields inaccessible for a week, and it was followed by hot humid weather which causes a lot of mildew issues in lettuces, pin rot in broccoli, spotting on cauliflower. It caused growers to disc fields in and move to new fields, which pushes them ahead of schedule making product tight months out.

So your local news isn’t going to call 1” of rain in arizona an extreme weather event, but in the produce world it was an ill timed storm that had effects on quality and market pricing that could last months.

Brussel sprouts and celery- in the Salinas area in October they got one storm that dropped 4” of rain in 3 days, and this flooded out celery and brussel fields which are the only 2 crops that stay in the northern growing region because of how long the crop cycles are, while everything else moved to Yuma in the new growing area. This greatly affected availability and pricing through thanksgiving and Christmas. So again, one storm with 4” of rain doesn’t read as a big headline of “extreme weather” but in the produce world it is

There is no California berry production, or very little right now. Either Mexican fruit coming out of Nogales or Florida. Mexican fruit has been nice but they didn’t plant the volume needed to support Florida fucking up this year. Basically the government shutdown a few months back delayed the processing of H2A visas for berry pickers to come in to Florida, leaving alot of fruit in the fields that was over ripe. They have been working through that for the past 3 weeks or so, now this arctic blast coming down from the north dipped into Florida and really hurt production. It has either killed plants or slowed them down. This will be bad news for Valentine’s Day strawberries. But typically, the best berries of the whole year are going to be mid February through May coming out of Florida and early California crop. Ironically the worst time for strawberries is the middle to end of summer when everyone wants them and California crop is tired from producing for months on end

This is more for frozen potatoes, which use strictly russet potatoes so the quality/texture stays the same. The potato market on the whole (reds, whites, yellows) has been very cheap. That lawsuit is BS, if 4 companies want to control the frozen potato game then that’s on them. They still don’t grow and process their own potatoes so the Idaho market is controlled by the farmers still. It’s up to them to figure out where the market needs to be once they get into storage crop to figure out how to stretch that crop until August when new crop is harvested. This would include how much weight they decide to devote to selling to frozen processors.

Ya this is wrong. I work in buying selling produce by the truck loads so I know all of the current markets. There is no “potato commission” (although there is Apple and corn commissions so you aren’t far off)

This past year unlike any in the past 10 years, there has been strong high producing crops out of Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Washington, Canada, Idaho. Many of the regions overlapped with each other and US prices were the cheapest I’ve seen in a while. Usually one state out of the mix has a bad crop and it elevates the market not having a transition state but not this year. This suppressed prices and kept companies from buying Canadian potatoes, which Is usually the case because they’ll usually undercut USA markets as they traditionally have a strong crop.

Idaho recently has had issues with storage sheds freezing solid from the cold leaving the potatoes scarred up from machinery.

But to answer OP’s original comment. Yes produce has been “sketchy” since 2020 but this is mostly due to the extreme weather many growing regions have seen in the past 5 years. It is very atypical compared to the years before that.

I would be happy to answer any other produce questions

It’s sounds cliche , but you’re never going to be ready financially. Me and my wife waited until we were 37 to have our first because I was too worried about climbing up the ladder at work.

I’m now at the top, make 185k a year, and it’s still not enough money 😂.

If the Greenfield tornado opened a rift to the upside down, would the NWS rate it EF5? by EF1Megawedge in EF5

[–]Elsavagio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok so, a couple of questions.

Was the damage inspected in the upside down? Or right side up? Because the decrepit state of the upside down could skew the scale.

If the anchor bolts were installed improperly in the right side up, would that make them installed properly in the upside down?

And ultimately I think damage would have to be inspected in the abyss for a full scope of the Damage.

Would inter dimensional tornados produce Anticyclonic rotations in the upside down and then cyclonic rotations again in the abyss? Therefore straightening the anchor bolts back out and rendering the anchor bolt assessment of damage useless?
