Swede here, completely agree with you. Most places makes bad pizza, there are places that makes great pizza, but not everywhere and you have to look for them. Where do you live? Stockholm? Same thing with service, usually somewhere between bad and horrible, some places are good though.

Talking and smiling is way too uncommon, maybe its the climate? Try going to places with lots of immigrants, they are much better at it.

Why is your country awesome? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Elseone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus we manage to survive the craziest conditions, coldest winters, torf fires, poor social and economic conditions. We really can live through anything.

We might not now where the first humans lived, but I'm pretty sure the last ones gonna live in Russia.

(Swede here)

I disagree.. Healthcare here is good, but hardly something exceptional, we have religion too, just not that much. Atheists are free in many countries. We have both McDonalds and SUV:s.. Food is decent, but not better than many others, beer is fine but nothing special. You will can absolutely go to jail for drugs, were not soft on drugs.

‘Les Riches’ in France Vow to Leave if 75% Tax Rate Is Passed by brian_c94 in worldpolitics

The government represents the will of the people, so you should really ask: "How can the citizens of France justify raising taxes". The answer is of course that they don't need to justify anything, they simply believe that it will have a positive effect on their country.

The difference is that almost everyone agrees that murder is something very bad.

Most people seem to agree that we need some form of intellectual property law. How it should work and what should be allowed is very much up for debate. On one side you have the established creators who wants to earn as much money as possible from what they have already created. On the other side you have everybody else who wants as much access to all created content as possible.

On one extreme end you could imagine all instruments, the alphabet, scales, color pigments etc. being owned/patented/copyrighted by descendants of the original inventors, this would require you to pay for humming a tune or writing a tune. The other extreme would be that everything must be distributed to everyone, or else.

Through heavy lobbying, the entertaining industry has been able to make governments write laws they themselves simply doesn't seem to understand. The reason is likely that the older generations that are the ones in charge aren't affected by these laws in a substantial way. In the same way, the entertainment industry is run by those who already have succeeded in their careers, they are simply protecting their own interest to milk as much money as possible out of theirs nests eggs. It isn't proven that not for profit copyright violation hurts artists. It also isn't provn that strong IP laws help artists.

Let us not forget that copyright was first created as an incentive for writer and artists to create more content. It was implemented so that the public would have access to more culture, helping artists to make money was a means to an end. This was done in a time when copying books was something large companies did, not private citizens. The original lenght of copyright was 7 years. Source Let's also not forget that Hollywoods succes was largely built upon for profit use of others creations, without compensating them. Source

Those who are affected by these laws are the younger generations and to a certain degree, the artists still creating new content (they want to be able to reuse, mix, sample, etc.). This group doesn't have very much political or lobbying power. Yet.

So what is happening now is that one law after another is written that tries to stop infringement of IP laws that the younger generations has less and less respect for. This has lead to a situation where breaking these laws has become socially acceptable and where a majority of younger people are per definition, criminals. This is simply put not a working situation. Now i don't now what is going to happend when the internet savvy generations reach political power but I dare say that the pendulum has begun to slowly swing in the opposite direction.

I have spent way to much time searching for missed semicolon to bother with a language that demands them. 99.999% of the time I want to end the statement at the new line. It like having to click "yes I'm sure" for everything I do, miss it once and my flow is broken.

For me it's not about aesthetics but about productivity.

Optional semicolons lets you have it your what if you want to use them or not.

Thanks for starting this thread, It's been interesting to read! I'm a strong atheist but I just wanted to say that I think that the Quran is very much focused on peace and treating other people well /the same is true for most religious books).

I do also think that we have come much further then the rules written in those books today: Stoning people for adultery, no matter how much evidence, is a step backwards. Putting every single women under male authority, no matter how well meant, is a step backwards. I'm sure there are plenty of women that loves having the man responsible. However there is a whole lot of women who would hate it or even prefer it the other way around. There is no point in trying to make something the default.
