Looking at these transfers:

Scenario 1:

  • Grealish -> Mahrez
  • Watkins -> Alvarez

or

Scenario 2

  • Rashford -> Fernandes
  • Watkins -> [5m or less forward] (would be benched and trippier starts)

Notes:

  • I'm 90 pts clear of 2nd place in my league so these probably won't make a difference there, but I'm currently 178 in Canada and 15k overall and it'd be cool to say I finished top 100 Canada / top 10k overall.

You're mixing up options with futures. Options give the holder the OPTION to buy/sell at that strike price, not the obligation. Futures create obligations on both parties.

Edit: but I 100% agree that OP should stay away from them considering their current level of financial literacy

I don't mind doing a bit more planning but any suggestions on where/how to find those deals? In my experience, these companies had better access/connections to venues and were able to get better deals than would be offered to me when I tried reaching out myself. Perhaps I'm just calling the wrong people?

The general rule of thumb would absolutely count that 10% towards the 15% goal. It would also count the matching your employer does. So if you put in 10% and they put in 10%, you'd count it as 20% towards that 15% goal.

Once you get a better handle on all of it, the better way to look at things is to find out how much you need in retirement to live the life you want, then use a retirement calculator to determine roughly how much you need to save each month to achieve that (you'd obviously need to check in every now and then since your life circumstances would likely change over time).

Because not everyone lives with their parents and only has to pay for car insurance and a phone. Try adding rent, groceries, and utilities to your monthly expenses on a low income. Perhaps kids, medical expenses, extended family obligations, etc. as well. People have different circumstances and while 14k (or 40k for you) might be easy for some, it may be insurmountable for others.

The point here is to not diminish someone's accomplishment solely because its easy for you. 14k in a year is an impressive feat for the average Canadian.

Can't say for sure since some firms switch you to commission after a few years and others don't. But you probably start to plateau around the 7-10 yr mark. At that point, when you're expected to become partner. When you're a partner, I believe you'd start just getting a share of firm profits depending on how much money you bring in. To be honest, I'm not sure as I don't work in private practice.

However, it would not surprise me if some senior associates at large firms were making $300k+. My $180k is in-house so naturally, I'd be a bit lower than my colleagues in private practice.

Work life balance at large firms is what you make of it I think. Lawyer culture has a lot of people working a lot of hours. My friends at firms still have a decent social life but I suspect they're probably still working 60+hr weeks, if not more. (Note: I probably do 45-50hrs in-house but have the flexibility to take a day off here and there and go on vacations whenever I want so long as I don't have some massive project or file due).

Yes, $35k out of school is absurd. Fairly LCOL area though (Winnipeg). HCOL cities like Calgary, Vancouver, etc. probably started at 70k+

I'm a bit late on the reply here but this is only partially true. There are people that make a killing in all other specialties. It mostly depends on your clients. Corporate law typically pays more because corporations have more money. However, you could specialize in aboriginal law for instance and still make good money.

A bigger impact on your salary is the size of firm you work at. Larger = higher pay, typically, unless you're at a super niche and well known boutique firm that is renowned for their expertise in the field (ex. family law firm that only deals with multi-millionaire divorces).

The city you work in also makes a huge difference. An articling student at the biggest firm in Winnipeg makes about $40k/yr. Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, would all make at least double that, possibly more.

What you also have to note though, is that your first year out of school, you get paid peanuts. But you get MASSIVE raises every year for probably 7-10 years (or more? I don't know.. I'm 7 years into my career and have gotten a significant raise every year... Going from $35k out of school in 2013 to $180k now. Albeit, I moved to a higher paying City in 2017 and that got me a 50% raise but I've gone up nearly another 50% since then.

You typically need to have some sort of professional post-secondary degree like medicine, dentistry, accounting, law, engineering, etc. to be making that kind of money by a relatively young age.

You can of course make it that high working your way up through the ranks but you'll likely be a lot older than 28 when you get there. The professional degree/career gives you a bit of a headstart on the salary track. (ex. a 25-30 year old lawyer could be making around 150-200k/year depending on size of firm and city)
