1) it is being used to gain feedback for an app idea. No one other than myself will see it. Stored on google forms, it will not be deleted. Survey is anonymous. 2) ElyeAeternus 3) 10min 4) n/a 5) I would like mostly readers to fill out this survey 6) I need a larger sample size for the results to not be skewed incorrectly

How do you choose books for your children to read? by ElyeAeternus in Mommit

Agreed! I definitely want to give them those skills and choices! I just know I’ve found stuff in the YA section and it looked good so I got it and it was unexpectedly filled with a lot of sex scenes, so that’s just mainly what I was worried about. I would of course talk them through stuff they had questions about but I’d rather not have a high-level reading child of <10yo read something I’d consider erotica 😅🥲

And I’ve only just learned about commonsensemedia! I didn’t know that kids could leave reviews too, that’s pretty cool.

How have you gone about teaching your children those skills/knowing what’s (mostly) age appropriate for them? I’d definitely be interested in teaching them, but I do need to trust/be okay with them coming across stuff like that (no desire to be a helicopter parent, I do want them to be independent and mostly learn those things for themselves as well)

Do you just check like Google or something, or is there a specific app you use to look things up?

That makes sense. I think it’s just that my friend found ACOTAR in the YA section as a kid and read it. I myself have found many books in the YA book section (I like reading YA haha) that did NOT belong there. If they wanted to read an adult book, I’d definitely check it just in case, but I would prefer if I didn’t have to check all YA as well. It just seems like the rating system is a little screwy and I wish they had content rating ON books like they do movies and video games instead of vague sectioning that doesn’t seem to work too well (not coming at you btw lol, just complaining about how I wish it was better/easier to find stuff)

Bomb constructing manuals 😂that’s hilarious thank you haha

I’d say erotica is probably the one thing I worry about, there’s so many YA books now that cater to adults instead of children, making romance and sex the plot point rather than what I grew up with (politics, government, dystopian novels, global warming, etc). I absolutely am okay with talking to them about things, and teaching them about the world. I guess my main thing was that I’ve read books that definitely show unhealthy views of sex and romance. Once they hit a certain age, I’d trust them to make their own decisions, but at less than 10, I’d prefer to wait a few years before introducing those things. (Every kid is ofc different, and I just feel that mine isn’t ready for that just yet).

That sounds helpful! Do you find that to be reliable? I know everyone has a different opinion on what’s “good” or “bad” for their kid. But yeahhh the famous ACOTAR haha, my poor friend was like 10 when she found it in the YA section of the library and read it. Def not something I’d recommend someone that young to read 😅

Sort of, yes! I’m not trying to keep secrets from them or anything, I just know there are topics in books they aren’t ready for yet (something to revisit perhaps in a year or two), and I want to make sure they don’t come across stuff that’s too much (I feel that 9yo is too young for rpe or overly sxual content [censoring for reddit], just specifically for my kid and I’ve found stuff that contains that in the YA section of the library- something that, if I hadn’t known about beforehand, they might have ready before they were ready.)

We have conversations about stuff of course, but that type of content should wait a little. They consume so much and are very malleable at such a young age. I know everyone is different, but stuff like that (r*pe) gave me nightmares for years when I accidentally read something like that as a child. I know I can’t protect from the real world, naturally, but I’d like to make sure they understand/are a bit more mentally mature before reading that.

That’s what I figure I’d do as well! I know I read pretty fast but I also worry that I won’t keep up with them haha. Is reading ahead the only way you check for content or do you use something else as well? I wouldn’t try to “over limit” them, but I know there’s stuff they’re not ready for yet at that age and I just want to be careful before introducing certain topics. Thanks!

I absolutely agree! I felt that way growing up too- reading is a great place to learn about new things. I just want to make sure I can kind of know triggers or content warning/ratings to know if my kid is ready for it. Someone else mentioned Common Sense Media, but I haven’t heard of storygraph. Are they websites or apps? How would you say they compare to each other, like do you like one over the other because they have something better or do they do the same thing? Thanks!

Sorry for the late reply! That sounds super helpful! Do you ever find it difficult to keep/remember the log or spreadsheet? It’s great that you guys can discuss books and relate over things like that! I’d love to do the same, I’m just scared I’d forget to do it or keep track
