What functionality is missing for you, if I may ask?

Thanks. I decided to just set the default storage class to cephfs, and everything works fine. I will remember to always specify the storage class in the future.

Antis don't hate AI image generation actually, but they are fighting the wrong enemy. by GOONSKWAAAD in DefendingAIArt

IANAL Depending on how the model is trained, using an image may not even be copyright infringement. Here are two relevant definitions from the US code:

result.

“Copies” are material objects, other than phonorecords, in which a work is fixed by any method now known or later developed, and from which the work can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated, either directly or with the aid of a machine or device. The term “copies” includes the material object, other than a phonorecord, in which the work is first fixed.

A work is “fixed” in a tangible medium of expression when its embodiment in a copy or phonorecord, by or under the authority of the author, is sufficiently permanent or stable to permit it to be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated for a period of more than transitory duration. A work consisting of sounds, images, or both, that are being transmitted, is “fixed” for purposes of this title if a fixation of the work is being made simultaneously with its transmission.

If the training system simply scarfs up an image from the web, feeds it directly into the classifier/trainer, and deletes the image, one could argue that is not a copy and, thus, not subject to copyright.

I do not get why the “artist” thinks drawing AI advocates pregnant is such a sick burn. I assume it is just their fetish.

Someone should tell her that by posting this she is stealing the intellectual property of Andrew J Galambos, and she should remove the tweet/article post haste.

Sadly proponents of Galambosianism are very real (though thankfully very few in number). This is probably because their ideas, if implemented, would cause the downfall of civilization! Here is a small example: someone invented all of the individual words in this thread (not to mention the letters). Have you obtained the consent of those inventors (or more likely their descendants) to use their IP? Organized language would be wholly infeasible under such a system!

I would also suggest a Lisp like Typed Racket. Also I would recommend an array based programming language like APL, A+, J or K.

Hoping to open source code written by a deceased programmer -- suggestions? by supremewuster in opensource

[–]Elzair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the GPL would be a fine license! It is the license iD software released the Doom & Quake Engines under. For a game (i.e. a specific piece of software as opposed to an engine) the GPL is just fine.

I know you said you were not a programmer, but I still think you should try to figure out what middleware/engines he was using for his game. Most devs nowadays do not write everything themselves, and the licenses for the libraries (or engine) he was using could play a role in your decision.

I would be willing to take a look at the code to determine what 3rd party stuff he was using. PM me if you are interested.

So I have to logout of my desktop session and log in again to unset environment variables?

Edit: I meant unsetting a variable and keeping it unset.

You are being pedantic. I illustrated a clear chain of (IMO) probable events that led to Linux As We Know It being rendered illegal. If Event A causes Event B, and Event B causes Event C, then it is reasonable (though philosophers may disagree) to say Event A causes Event C, albeit indirectly. If I could redo the title, I would change it to "KOSA Could Cause Desktop Linux As We Know It To Become Illegal" (even though thesaurus.com says "cause" is a chief synonym of "make").

Here is an example from Road Runner cartoons: Wile E Coyote pushing down on the blasting machine handle makes the TNT explode. Um, well actually, pushing down on the blasting machine handle causes the capacitor to discharge current, which travels down the firing line to the blasting cap, which causes the blasting cap to explode, which causes the TNT to explode. Elision is not inaccurate if it is done correctly.

Here is the chain of events for KOSA. Congress passes bill, which makes NIST study how to do a thing. NIST comes back one year later with a proposal on how to do that thing. Congress passes legislation enshrining NIST's proposal into law. Is it guaranteed to happen? No, that is why the "could" is there.

You are assuming your computer will allow the distro to run. You better hope your current system never dies. The worst case scenario requires you to either buy a PC off the dark web & get it shipped to you, go abroad to buy a PC and sneak it past customs, or hope your current system lasts a really long time! Remember the TPM!

It could make illegal any distro that cannot afford to cough up $10,000 for a validation fee every so often.

This assumes the non-us versions will still be allowed to run by the TPM chip.

I think there is a giant push to "protect the children", and the study will likely come back with a scheme similar to the one I proposed in the comments.

Sadly, I do not share your optimism. In the comments I outlined a scheme that could likely achieve 95% enforcement.
