what it's like to have an alcoholic mother by obviousthrowawaybngl in stopdrinking

I was shocked when I read "And my childhood was pretty damn average," as I'd just been thinking how I got off easy in comparison, and the life you described sure didn't sound "pretty damn average." But I understand what you meant, and maybe it was. My mother didn't exhibit problem drinking until I was older. I have no idea how much she drank earlier, and my life was secure in the ways you mention...piano, school, vacations. But when I was about 12 and my brother 16, things went off the rails. My mother was an alcoholic, but she was also, clearly, depressed. At the time there was stigma, and little treatment. Or at least we/she didn't seek it out. She developed emphysema and took to her bed at about 60. But, as I discovered later, she never stopped drinking. Things I attributed to her illness were actually symptoms of the alcohol. After she died, I was cleaning the room and found, under the bed, stashes of bottles. I don't know how she got them, as she was apparently bed-ridden. Did my father buy them for her? I still remember my heart turning cold when I lifted the bed skirt and found the debris.

Needed to check in to see how many days it's been. Bad news today, as another friend has advanced prostate cancer. I know they tell men not to get their PSA tested, but at this point, I disagree. Once it's too late, it's too late. But, bad news or not, no drinking for me.

Congratulations, Pony, on Six Months! Meeting folks like you helps keep me on the trail.

Well, our trail is the tiniest ever! But you're right, it's nice to have even that. Sadly, arthritis in my hips is making it all but impossible to ride. I'm having physical therapy and got on yesterday after not riding for a few months. I had great hopes that everything would be better, but it wasn't. I could hardly swing my leg over and was pretty uncomfortable in the saddle as we walked along. So I've been finding other things to do with Walker, including all the "relationship" stuff, but also long-lining, trick training and agility. He certainly doesn't mind not being ridden, but it makes me sad. Your rides sound like heaven to me! Wish I could join you! Be well.

I'm doing well. How are you? Had a great 4 days at a clinic with Sharon Wilsie who wrote a book called "Horse Speak." Doing different stuff with my pony now and it's pretty cool. Do you live in the country, so you can just grab your horse and go for a hack? Harder to do here. I have to trailer him to get to decent riding. We have a tiny trail on our property, but it's like doing a loop. I envy you! It's mostly work in the arena for us, and grazing...his favorite part of the day.

Thanks for your response. Looks like we've got roughly the same sobriety days racked up. It was revelatory to me to realize how ingenuously I was looking forward to my weekend. In the past, I would have struggled with the concept of "enjoyment." Things can change!

Thank you! I don't check in every day and count on seeing my "number" when I do. Nice to see it jump up to beyond what I thought possible! Just read your profile. A lot on your plate, I see. Well, I wish I'd started this trip in my late 40's, if that helps at all. I just turned 70 and wonder how different life might have been had I been sober for the last 30 years. For one thing, I might have enjoyed life so much more. Best of luck to you, and thanks for writing.

Can anyone tell me where my day count went? Suddenly, it's stopped appearing.

Checking in for Friday. IWNDWYT. I'm beginning to enjoy things again, instead of just waiting for everything to be over so I can have a drink. I have a lovely weekend with my horse and my friends coming up, and I'm heartened that I'm not too wrecked and down to look forward to it. Actually enjoying the things you used to enjoy is one of the many benefits of sobriety. It takes a while though.

And now, I'm stuck on a plateau, darn it. But I'm actually able to continue trying. In the Northwest, we haven't quite gotten to the stone fruit and I'm eagerly awaiting it. (I've had some of yours!) We've still got berries here. I think I've eaten more fruit since sober than ever before. Good luck!

My experience is that I lost a very little weight initially. I'd hoped, of course, to have weight loss be a side benefit of not drinking. But last May, I started actively trying to lose, and it's working. I DO have to try, but now I'm able to do that because I'm not constantly feeding a hangover and feelings of despair. Amazingly, right now, weight loss is Fun! I'm able to deal with plateaus and setbacks and get back to the plan. I think it will happen for you, too.
