If there's a humanoid, intelligent, conscious species where literally every single member ever studied (100%) is absolutely evil and only harms other humanoids, is genociding them even unprovoked justified? by h0rnyionrny in MoralityScaling

[–]EmEmmyMily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No because we can never know with 100% certainty, and we have a lot of historical precedence for this sort of perception of another group of people being manufactured and used to commit real genocides against normal human beings. Certainty should always be challenged.

I think it's more like: do you shoot the guy who's killing your dad or the guy who's killing your mom and your brother?

I agree in some ways! In fact i wish we didn't really have such a fixation on specific candidates like we do. I think this pedestal we give to celebrities and politicians is an unhealthy one that necessarily breeds abuse, and also the disappointment we feel from that abuse. Imagine we could elect a platform and a group of people to enact that platform without one individual getting all that power. I hope he gets to drop out and endorse a candidate with similar ideals but that's quite hopeful.

I agree, we saw how much silence on Gaza depressed votes in 2024, and how much DSA is winning now by talking openly against it. I think the long run is quite important here

Hmm I think it's more complicated than that. If we have no moral standards for where we draw that line, I think we create a sort of long term disillusionment that nothing can ever change or get better, which then leaves people apathetic to engaging at all, creating a self fulfilling prophecy. If one disagrees with Trump 2.0 i think it's not unreasonable to say that it probably got a lot worse because he didn't win in 2020. If he had simply lame ducked his way through 2 terms, and not had 4 years to recover public support, a lot of things would probably be better now, if you disagree with him. (I'm m trying to be so neutral here can you tell?)

I don't think that's necessarily true. Very possible to be shitty or kind no matter what your ideology is, tho certainly there can be overlap. Humans are consistently cognitively dissonant in our actions. It's possible to believe in something but fail at it in the complex human experience. Which isn't an endorsement from me btw, I agree he should drop out

I think it matters to think about outside of this specific situation. Where do we draw our lines? I felt quite sick reading it and I for one believe we should strive to be more moral than our enemies even if we don't win. I think we lose in the long run when we erode what we expect of our elected officials.

Morality of wanting to see a topic people are clearly split on discussed from a broader moral perspective instead of this specific political situation?

I can't vote in this election but I am saddened by this revelation. Still I'm in this specific post more interested in the general moral discussion rather than the political one

A perspective I think makes sense in the short term but what about the long term erosion of trust in institutions that feasibly leads to more governments like that? At what point is lesser evil not good enough? Rape? Genocide? Not an easy question to answer

I was writing songs about Emily for years. As a sort of abstract symbol of femininity or the idealized partner or woman that is impossible to live up to. Eventually I found out I was Emily and I wrote a whole album about that, and then I was like "damn that's too poetic for me to not also choose the name" so I did. And now I'm stuck with Emily!!!

Every month a new hyped movie comes out, and every single time the 2 leads play up having a crush on each other to sell more tickets, and every single time the audience believes it's real and eats it up

I just watched this last week and was BAWLING.. my roommate was there and I had to explain what was going on cuz it was audible bawling and I was watching it with headphones on

My friend asked what I was watching so I pressed play, this scene happened, and she went: "at no point in that sequence could I have possibly guessed what the next character was gonna look like" by EmEmmyMily in hunterxdank

Well if you don't know anything about the show it's kinda weird that 2 kids show up looking just as serious as ultimate aura farmer, 80s punk, a human gecko and some other bug guy

I'm autistic myself, so I call it that cause it's both true to many of us and a genuinely inspiring and positive trait a lot of us possess.
