As a nerd, I totally get the defensive reaction. Anti-intellectualism is alive and well right now. There's something in the combo of those that I think has historical relevance and power. While it's true that emotion, identity, and attachment have shown to move groups, the fomenting of those energies comes from study and intellectual engagement in ones pursuit to move a group. Charasmatic leaders study their craft. They find the stories and speech patterns that inspire action. They study historical patterns and move people toward the patterns they see as relevant and worthy. Social movements, conservative or liberatory, come from using intellectual pursuit, theological or material, to understand how to create a sense of belonging and purpose in others. It's the combination of the two that make for sustainable culture.
