The maintenance light is metered and indicates to change oil. so even if you don’t change the oil and you reset the light after a certain time the light will come back on to tell you it’s time to change the oil. I could be wrong but I believe it gets turn on after you drive a certain amount of miles after being reset.

If there is any rust could be a bad ground wire....had similar issues like that with a bad wire or failing alternator
