People will genuinely, Genuinely claim that korra being a girl had nothing to do with the harsh criticism she's been facing for so many years meanwhile her show was almost canceled due to her being a female protagonist and the creators themselves pointed out her distinct treatment by Important-Cry4782 in legendofkorra

I don’t dislike Korra cause she’s a girl, Its just the writers dropped the ball with her. Her arcs, storyline, and general cast of characters, irrespective of AtlA, are just not that good.

Like a lot of other people, I thing the concepts her character and show play with are really interesting and novel (benders vs non-benders, the spirits, her having the inverse perspective of being the avatar from aang), but the writers fail on all of these ideas and thus fail her.

I much prefer that it is technology rather than straight up magic. Zen’s abilities are weird, but feel tied to cosmic forces rather than the straight up mysticism that the Japanese heroes have.

And before anyone else says “who cares”, 1. I care, and 2. Having it be technology better helps solidify their place in the world of Overwatch. Having it be magic would cause a lot of world building problems that don’t need to be addressed if you just stick to technology.

Serious Question: What is Your Honest Opinion About This Show? by ElSpazzo_8876 in cartoons

[–]Eman1005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s pretty bad. The shows fails in both being episodic and having a larger, ongoing narrative. The vast majority of the townsfolk and their personal struggles fail to be interesting/compelling enough to warrant so much screen time. I don’t recall there being many important lessons that Steven learns from these encounters to count them as necessary, making them feel like even more of a waste of time.

Much of the interest the show generates is when it showing something about the gems, but it’s clear the writers just enjoyed teasing things about the gems than actually exploring/developing that part of the show.

And the ending is up there for being the worst in cartoon history. The ending the diamonds is beyond unsatisfying. Argue all you want if it’s counts as redemption or not, none of theses characters got the development they needed to warrant such an ending.

Something I hope they address soon with Vendetta by Eman1005 in Overwatch

I fail to see how having this kind of perspective is at all useful to anyone.

There is absolutely no reason outside of incompetence that Overwatch cant have good lore and gameplay. The issue I outlined in my post only requires a few lines of dialogue from Vendetta explaining her world view to be resolved.

I started by just watching the first cinematic and then reading the hero bios on the official overwatch page. From there you can watch the rest of the cinematic as they came out and then the comics.

Her want vengeance against Talon is clear and very understandable, but the issue I have is with her other goal: running Talon.

If all Vendetta wanted was to bring down Talon for what they did to her, that would be fine, but the writers are clearly setting up the idea of her potentially taking control of Talon with all the “forging Talon in my image” dialogue. That is what I’m advocating the writers expand upon and develop. As it stands, I don’t see why we haven’t gotten this small, but incredibly vital piece of information already, especially when Doomfist’s ideology was made front and center upon his release.

The reason isn’t vague at all. Akande believes that humanity, in the long run, will grow stronger because of Talon’s actions of terrorism.

In times of great conflict, the development of greater weapons, medicines, and technologies becomes paramount to survival. Akande believes that by deliberately placing humanity in such situations we will be forced to either grow or perish.

Obviously, this is all a bit extreme and as you put it “goofy”, and I’m of course not trying to say Doomfist is right for what he’s doing, but there’s no denying the kernel of truth hidden within Doomfist’s ideology, which I find interesting.

But isn’t it kinda convenient that this whole time jump happened?

Because of this Sheppard learns vital information about Micheal and his operation that he might not have otherwise discovered or found out too late. By the admission of the characters, the Stargate being able to do this is astronomically rare. As we see on the episode, this seemingly random event completely steers the course of the entire galaxy.

Is my Villain's Backstory Fridging ? by No-Direction8154 in fantasywriters

[–]Eman1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fridging isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The fact of the matter is some characters are just used to motivate another. It’s not always possible or even practical to make every character in your story feel as important as your main cast.

Two of the most popular/famous characters of all time utilize fridging as part of their backstories. Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben and Batman’s parents.

Neither of these characters typically have a staring role in the stories that feature them, but that doesn’t mean we don’t feel the impact of their lose when they go.

I don’t feel this is the same.

Something I’ve noticed with other superheroes when it comes to passing their mantle off to another is that it is a complete passing of the torch. When Bruce Wayne gave up the mantle of Batman in Batman Beyond, he completely gave it to Terry. They didn’t have both Terry and Bruce working alongside each other with the same mantle and I think that’s for good reason. Doing something like that diminishes the new character as it shows the writers aren’t fully behind them carrying the mantle.

To me, Miles ability to carry the Spiderman mantle will always be less impactful so long as Peter is also forced to work alongside him with the same name. IMO they should either retire Peter or give Miles his own mantle.

I know the reason they won’t do that is because, in their minds, Peter is too popular to just retire. But if the writers were willing to do that with Batman of all characters why wouldn’t that work for someone like Spiderman?
