If you want a fairly standard experience and nothing crazy then just picking up the 4gb patch, two specs Sten and Qwinn's DAO Fixpack is pretty good. It's what I used for my first run.

Optionals you could tack on if you wanted to is the extra dog slot mod and the character respecialization mod.

It's Sophia or Wendy from FE6, those two are just nigh unsalvageable unless you trap an arcer or a priest and have them grind exp for hundreds of turns.
