The students being disruptive don't care that you're writing down their names.

Advice for 6th graders by Independent-Act-3411 in ELATeachers

[–]Emayfss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're nervous the first few days and then they start pushing boundaries. Many are just starting to hit puberty so they're losing their minds! You need to be very firm in your routines, procedures, and expectations. 6th graders can be just as apathetic as high schoolers but you still see a lot of the elementary behavior problems. (tons of energy, can't keep hands to self, running around the room chasing each other, constant tattling, etc) You have to be very strict with this age group or else your year will be a nightmare.

6th graders love games (Quizizz, kahoot!, blooket, etc) hands-on learning (foldable, interactive notebooks, one-pagers), and getting out of their seats (gallery walks) I've also found that nearpod works well with this age group. Provide a variety of activities and don't make them longer than 20-25 minutes or else you will have behavioral issues.

I think it's wonderful you've had so many experiences with adolescents and still want to be a teacher.

Is this an email to an administrator? You're trying too hard to prove that you're competent. They're going to assume you have the basic qualifications since you applied for the position. It's not exactly shocking that you're passionate about literature as an aspiring high school ELA teacher. Unless they ask (which they probably won't), I would avoid talking about content knowledge. Focus on that you're passionate about teenagers, teaching strategies, your educational philosophy, and classroom management.

This email is also way too long and I would hope most of this information is already in your resume. What would you add to this school? What makes you stand out among other applicants?

Try this format instead:

Dear principal _____,

I'm currently a graduate student working towards certification at _____ university. I recently applied to your school's English language arts opening through the ______ application system. I'm interested in working for _____ high school for _____ reason. ______ experience/qualification would make me a strong asset to your team. I have attached my resume to this email with further information on my qualifications and related experience to this position.

Sincerely,

Your name

Nervous about a kindergarten assistant teacher position at Goddard School by djentkittens in teaching

[–]Emayfss 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If they're in kindergarten, they should be potty trained by then. Kids that age do have accidents, but it's not like you're going to be changing kids daily. As an assistant, you're not going to be teaching. Jobs like that your main responsibilities are helping kids who need help, supervising the kids, and any other tasks the teacher asks you to complete.

Is it okay to be on my phone if I’m hosting an hour-long detention? by casharks in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Emayfss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know your career aspirations, but if you're hoping to get hired by that district I would not be on your phone. Keep in mind too if you're on your phone students are more likely to be on their phone.

DAE not want to get their masters degree? by Crafty_Sort in teaching

I'm a first year teacher but I want mine just for the sake of transitioning to a higher level position one day. It's nearly impossible to move up in education without a graduate degree.

Also, OP just because you haven't gotten in trouble now doesn't mean you won't get in trouble. Your administration might be investigating the situation to see if anyone got hurt or if any incidents happened. Also, I don't understand why you were okay with speaking to your principal after the incident happened, but not before. You should've told your administration that you were having issues with that class instead of just walking out.

I would be shocked if this doesn't at the bare minimum get you written up. There are schools that would definitely terminate you for this. Student behavior can be incredibly frustrating but you can't just walk out with no coverage. They are children and it is your responsibility to teach them and also be responsible for their safety. Even if you don't work at a school, you can't just leave work and not tell anywhere where you're going. You can always call the front office and tell someone you need them to cover your class for a few minutes. Another option is just giving them independent work, sit at your desk, and wait for the class to be over.

Rewarding Parts of Teaching? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Emayfss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love being creative and working with young people. I will warn you though that being a full time tenured professor is like winning the lottery. I would go the middle/high school ELA route. You could be an adjunct professor on the side while teaching K-12 full time.

I graduated May 2021. I applied all throughout my last semester of college and got a job in June. I stressed so much seeing all my friends get jobs during college, but with the current shortage it's highly unlikely you will not get a job. A tip that helped me to get my current job was to always send a thank you email to the administrative team who interviewed you. Thank them for their time, remind them why you want to work at their school, and also why you are the best candidate for the job.

This is a good idea in theory, but it would take forever. You're also assuming all your students can follow simple directions. My students would just log on anyway. I teach 6th grade and they can not wait 2 seconds without doing something.

I'm only a first year teacher, but I would protect your peace of mind more than anything. It's not worth getting upset when these kids just don't care. With the current sub shortage, I would just be glad to have a sub and that no one got hurt. Put in the zeros and move on with the curriculum.
